Ritchey HI-lo flange

  1. I was looking at the wheels on Ritchey's site and noticed that most of
    there wheels come with a larger non-drive flange than drive flange.
    According to Ritchey the "hi-lo rear hub flange eliminates dish
    tension problems." How can this be? If you work out the geometry a
    smaller flange should even out tension because of the smaller bracing
    angle (assuming the spokes aren't tangential to the flange). I have
    also spoken to the people at Phil Wood who have the same design. They
    also claim that a larger non-drive flange will even spoke tension and
    that the fact that you can use the same length spoke on both sides is
    a coincidence. Does anyone understand the logic behind this theory?
    If so please enlighten me.
