the .com and .org domains appear to be served by separate providers with
separate servers. The ISP that hosts and dns' the .org page, as far as I
can tell, is a shop called simonweb.

It doesn't look good for them!

No response from any obvious pages like www.simonweb.com, which Google
still has cached, and then there's this uptime rating:

In short, I'm not sure how Sheldon's doing, but his ISP for the .org

Sheldonbrown.org is hosted by simonweb.com. I picked Simonweb because
it was dirt cheap. (I have to pay for sheldonbrown.org myself, as
opposed to sheldonbrown.com, which is paid for by Harris Cyclery.)

Unfortunately, simonweb.com is currently offline, taking with it both
sheldonbrown.org and my brother's site junila.com.

I hope they get it fixed soon. If not, I'll need to find another
cheap host with a high traffic limit.

If you haven't checked lately, take a look around at hosting plans.
There are all sorts of folks offering inexpensive hosting with lots of
bandwidth. It's changed quite a bit over the last couple years.

which seems to have a MUCH better deal, US$8.50/month for 20 GB an
unlimited bandwidth!

I'll be moving .org and probably some of my other domains to that site
ASAP.

Interesting data, but we're talking about website hosting services, and
you seem to be describing your personal internet access. They're two
different things, and the parameters of what is available in those two
markets are quite different.

It's possible to get service such that you're either hosting with your
ISP, or where you have the servers at your site and host from there
through your ISP, but the first scenario is not all that common in my
experience (because being an ISP and being a hosting provider are fairly
different businesses), and the latter is usually limited to either
businesses with fairly specialized or industrial-strength web needs, or
to reasonably serious nerds.

I can't really think of a way to get this on topic,
