  1. Hi there.

Last night I posted some messages that still have not appeared on the
    groups.

The one about the Vitus frame is very important to me as I have an
appointment to go pick it up tonight.

What I most need to know is if a Vitus circa 1980s frame is suitable
    for a 180 pounds bicyclist.

I would also b nice if my one inch stem will fit into the Vitus frame.

Any one who knows the answers to these two points are welcome to reply
directly to my Yahoo address which works as is.

    Thank you very much.

    Hopeful Peter

I know of a 180 lbs (very muscular) guy who had one back in the day.
It worked fine for him! It will be spongy for sprints or that sort of
    thing, but very comfortable.

As I recall there was nothing strange about the steerer. Ie, it was
    not French.

    Have fun!

As for cold-setting the frame to work with 130mm spacing, I'd bet the
Vitus is soft enough to not bother with a cold-set. Just jam the wheel
    in there.

Is this a Vitus 979, the bonded aluminum frame with only slightly
    oversized
tubes? If yes, it has alot to do with the frame size. Up to 56 or so
    the frames
were ok. Above 56cm the frames were really flexy. I would try before
    I buy.
The 979 used standard parts, nothing special. A 1" headset and an
    english
bottom bracket. At various times I had a Dura-Ace, Onza and Mavic
    headset
    on my 979.

    Thanks Alex.

It is an aluminium lugged frame 57 cm measured from centre of bb to
centre of seat tube. I just posted picks of the frame at:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/73832500@N00/

Unfortunately I can not try the frame as it is not built up. It is
just the frame, Campy bb and Campy headset.

    Cheers from Peter

    Hi all.

I just got a call from my driver saying he can not take me to pick up
the frame tonight or this weekend. Therefore I will not be getting it.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Yes, riders do just slip 130mm wheels in the 125mm Vitus 979 frames but
the incidence of cracked chainstay/BB and chainstay/end is pretty high.

OTOH if it's cheap enough to not cry over, a crack in the back end of a
frame is a walk home, not a rider injury.
