I'm not in bike riding shape at all. I plan to buy my bike and start riding it to work (about 5 miles) daily and start working my way up. I'm almost 53 and still play basketball and tennis. I know I have a long way to go but I know me too and unless something with work stops me I will be heading cross country starting in Nov. I will have to take a southery route because it's going to be cold. Do people cross country in Nov/Dec?

Sure sounds like it will be an amazingily satisfying challange! I have been contemplating spending a few weeks this summer cycling across Europe.

Lots of useful info. Also generally on that forum and this, you will likely find tonnes of information and advice on building up your training to be able to do this.
