    It helps to know your way round Hansard! As well as writing to my MP
    (who has not replied) I also wrote to Jo Swinson who asked specific
    questions about the Highway Code consultation in Parliament pointing out
    that the reassurances she had been given by Ministers had not been
    honoured. I have just had back the following e-mail:

    Dear Mr Raven,

    Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I appreciate your concern
    that the new revised draft Highway Code has not taken into account the
    many concerns raised by cyclists during the recent consultation. I was
    also recently contacted by one of the many cyclists from my constituency
    who raised this issue with me during the consultation, and I appreciate
    that many are concerned about wording of the revised draft, and that the
    changes have not alleviated the potential problems for cyclists within
    the new Code.

    I have therefore now written once again to the Minister of State for
    Transport, Dr Stephen Ladyman, with regard to this issue. I have
    explained concerns that the revised draft of the Highway Code, as laid
    before Parliament last month, has not taken into account many of the
    issues which were raised during the consultation. I have also explained
    that I was assured in responses to previous correspondence on this issue
    and in Transport Questions last year, that the new draft of the Highway
    Code would take into account the concerns raised by cyclists and would
    not force them off the roads for fear of legal consequences.

    I have advised Mr Ladyman that many cyclists do not feel that this has
    been the case and remain concerned that they will be forced to use
    inadequate and unsuitable facilities as a result of the new code, and I
    have requested that he explain how the new Code has addressed the
    concerns raised by cyclists during the consultation period, and why it
    has not been amended to ensure it does not impinge on the rights of
    cyclists to use the roads, and to ensure that they are not compelled to
    use substandard facilities.

    I hope that this letter will be of some assistance, and I will copy you
    into any response I receive from the DfT and pursue the issue further if
    this is unsatisfactory.

    be able to assist you in this matter.

    Well, that's something I suppose. I seem to recall that CTC newsnet of
    30/03/07 said "We will be considering how best to respond. We urge
    members to 'hold fire' for the moment - more news next week." Does
    anyone have any news at all of how that is coming, or have the CTC
    gone completely supine on this one?

    I was doing some research in the water industry and read a report from the
    House of Lords science (and technology?) committee following up on an
    eralier one in which they made several recommendations to the goverment and
    the industry.

    The report heavily criticised the goverment for dismissing all their
    suggestions but was encouraged to an extent that at least everyone else had
    acknowledged their advice even if they weren't taking it on board.

    Seems the current goverment doesn't listen to anybody but themselves.....

    Rather to my surprise, got a letter back from my MP today - basically
    a fairly stock "I'll be contacting the undersecretary" job, but more
    than I'd expected given that she's a Blair Babe. (Though this year she's
    started to vote against the government from time to time.)

    I email both my MP and Lord Berkeley[1] over a week ago and have not had
    replies from either.

    [1] Lord Berkeley claims to be a cyclist, and has raised cycling issues
    in the upper house.

    The CTC have said absolutely nothing. They are certainly supine -- having laid
    down and died on this subject. A visit to their website gives no indication of
    effort at all. Mind you it is difficult to find anything on the website in any
    case!

    It was also the CTC AGM last Saturday and any detail of that is also totally
    without mention as far I as can tell. The agenda of that meeting didn't even
    consider that the HC was important enough to be included. Too busy creating
    internal policies and politics ( typical of an self sustaining conglomerate).

    Just 2 more reasons why I shall not renew my membership of this autocratic,
    moribund and burgeoning conglomerate.

    Just too busy being self sustaining and ever more and more remote from its
    members!

    Once I am no longer a member I shall feel more able to criticise but in the
    meantime I have withdrawn from making comment on the CTC message boards and
    have also withdrawn from their ever increasing amount of its net based
    spamming of its members. I feel it is only proper to wait until my current
    membership runs its course out before

    I do urge anyone, who has not done so, to write to their MPs about the second
    draft of the HC. It is so important and it is this sort of personal response
    to the matter that is so much more effective than the sort of "mass sponsored
    CTC" effort earlier this year.

    As an daily "on road" cyclist I am very very much aware of the pressure to
    sideline cyclists off the roads.

    ( I also do tend to rant a bit about things that appear important to me --
    sorry about that!)

    I wrote to Yannick Read (responsible for the newsnet) on the 20th April,
    saying "Nothing about the Highway Code issue?".

    They replied on the 1st May saying [1] "Lots happening behind the scenes -
    expect an announcement this week."

    [1] In email, but I figure it's communication with an organisation, not
    per se private.

    They really ought to put something on their website (front page), even
    if it said "We're working on this issue but we're not able to give
    details now. Please do feel free to/don't lobby your MP".

    I give a fair amount to the CTC each year[1] - certainly enough to pay
    for the printing and postage of a one page glossy flier to all 650 odd
    MPs.

    I don't actually think that this would do any good but I've been sorely
    tempted to try it anyway because the CTC seem to be doing sweet FA. My
    membership comes up for renewal at the end of June so I'm leaving it
    until then and then I'll either carry on with the CTC or I'll join the
    LCC. There's nothing on the LCC website either except a note to say the
    CTC is coordinating the campaign. Nothing on the BCF website either that
    I can see - but I won't join them anyway until they fix their h****t
    stance.

    [1] as this comes straight out of my pay I don't actually know whether
    they know it's me. Certainly they wouldn't be able to link it back to my
    membership number other than by coincidence of names
    I get tax relief on my donations (they come out of my pretax pay) that I
    presumably wouldn't be able to claim so the glossy flier might be a
    slight exaggeration.
