Gearshift wheels

This may not be any use to you, you're asking one question, and I'm answering another, but.....

If you're after a good deal on wheels then Oldham Cycle Centre have three options in their special
offers section at the moment:

They seem to have a good reputation as wheelbuilders although I haven't ridden any myself.

I can't offer advice on Gearshift I'm afraid, never used 'em.

I had an Orbit bike (owned by the same people as Gearshift) and the wheels were and have been fine.
I wrote the frame off when a BMW driver decided that he wanted his McDonalds in a hurry and pulled
straight in fornt of me. Front wheel hit straight on and is still perfectly true. Both wheels are
now on a new frame, and have managed the 45 mile round trip commute to work through central London
without ever going off true. They've also done a tour of the Lakes with full panniers, so can take
some weight (I'm not the lightest of riders either).

I received an email today to my address that I use for this NG. The mail was from Gearshift offering
me a discount or something. I have had no communication with Gearshift so all I can assume is that
they have harvested my address from here and spammed me. I shall put them at the end of the list of
folks to do business with.

I've been commuting on a Deore hub/Mavic 510/DT triple butted 700c rear built by Gearshift for about
3 weeks now over fairly damaged roads and it seems to be hanging together well - spoke tension seems
quite high and even and there weren't any nasty twanging noises on first use - I'm not light and the
bike's well loaded so they at least seem pretty strong. I couldn't find any other online shops that
had the combination I was after off the shelf so that's why I went there. Minor tip - when I ordered
online it turns out that if you order online the wheel build is free whereas if you phone or go
direct they charge for it:-)

The rim tape was very poor quality though and responsible for multiple nocturnal punctures.

To be slightly fair to them, it was their lowest of the range tandem. But even so, you'd hope that
they'd have the self respect to not allow something out of the doors with low quality (even for a

Yes, I had meant to imply , in a not altogether serious way, that a single ride of 1000kms. was a
long one and had a bike a personality it might be entitled to be a bit uppity at having been kept up

Then I had to remember that the computer could only cope with 10^5 seconds per trip...

I don't know if more recent computers can cope with longer trips. I had a Vetta C15.
