  1. Hi all, I'm wondering how much fitness I will end up losing by the end of an estimated seven to eight week period of complete rest due to a head injury. It depends on a lot of factors I'm sure, but since I have so much extra time to think about these things I thought I'd ask on this forum. The injury occured at the end of my "Build 2" block -- don't know if that's a standard term or not. I'm a competitive Masters/Cat. 3. By complete rest I mean not doing anything more than walking from the house to the mailbox and back on days that I feel up to it (which is most days lately). Thanks.

  2. I wish you a speedy recovery. Any thoughts on using an e-stem unit to keep your mm's firing (fast twitch)?

Thanks, but I've never heard of such devices. It's been five weeks already though...

  4. I hear your question... and am in a similar situation to you.

3 x months ago I had a catastrophic head on collission with a Van... I'm only now contemplating getting back into cycling.

I joined a gym and started an RPM (Spin) class to get my legs back... it's a good idea to do this to test out your legs and get your confidence back... thus far, I feel as if I have lost some fitness... but not too bad...

    Good luck on your recovery...

  5. I took about 8 weeks off and I will never do it again. I still rode just didnt do intervals and lost a ton of fitness. Im struggling to get it back now, been 2 months back.

  6. The real answer is of course too individual for any of our replies to really tell you much. One old "rule of thumb" is roughly two weeks training to make up for each week off, so eight weeks of inactivity would take around 16 weeks to be back in the condition you were in before your accident. That was roughly my experience after a car left me with a broken arm and leg just at the end of last racing season, in September. I was back on the bike around December, and seem just now (end March) to be back roughly where I was. But that includes a bunch of reduced training weeks with East Coast winter, so my guess is that with good weather in AZ, you might be in racing shape after maybe 3 months training. But remember, you can start competing sooner, all these rules of thumb can do is give a very general hunch about when you will be back.

Thanks, a rule of thumb is what I was hoping for. It's going to be a tough season. 🙂
