Cleat Install?

Grease the screws so you can make them as tight as possible, and so
they don't creak.
As far as the positioning is concerned, either pay a bike shop to set
you up with a fit kit, or do-it-yourself by trial and error until it
feels right. You can mark the position of the cleat on the shoe sole
for reference as you go along. I use a metallic silver sharpie pen to
trace the outline of the cleat, and remove the ink with denatured
alchohol to change it.

Good place to start, the cleat has a little line on the side..line
that up with the general ball of your foot. Point the cleats somewhat
toward the toe of the shoe center. go ride and see or, see a bike shop
that does cleat fittings, another advatage of buying your shoes and
pedals at a bike shop, BTW-

I second that heartily. I got new shoes and new cleats recently and
no matter how tight the cleats seemed, they squeaked every time I
rode. So I pulled the bolts out one by one, greased the threads, and
screwed them back in with a *big* screwdriver--no squeaks. If you have
to use a hex key, be sure to use the short end in the bolt and get the
leverage of turning long end. You need to make these pretty darn
tight. And check them after a couple of rides to make sure they are
not loosening up (and then check them every month or so after that).
I lost a bolt on a ride once, the cleat got loose and unclipping
suddenly became an adventure...

1. Always grease the screw threads! Once that cleat wears out, the
grease may make all the difference in whether or not you can get them
back out again!

2. Rumor (as well as an old Look flyer) has it that Look once made a
"fitter". It was a cam that went between the shoe sole and the cleat.
When "released", you could slide your shoe around on the pedal. With it
"engaged", nothing moved. Once you'd found the sweet spot/proper
position, you engaged the cam, released your foot, marked the cleat
position, removed the cam, and tightened the screws.

Working in the computer field, I know that the cam may have existed only
on that flyer, but it would sure be handy if they were around!

Many LBS have them but you can get the effect by greasing the fasteners
and turning them almost tight. The 'cam' is about the shape of a cheap
aero spoke (~1.8 x 2.2 -ish) and gets twisted to put a little pressure
on the cleat once you decide on a location.
