  1. A silver BMW is loose in Surrey with a set of 20" high abrasions down teh passenger side (from about
the front door back) where it decided it would rather physically push me off teh road than wait till
after the traffic island to overtake. If anyone spots it, they may care to remind teh driver that
leaving the scene of an incident where damage has been caused is an offence. The police have my
statement, and maybe they'd like to offer theirs...

Anyway, I'm shaken but not injured. The trice needed some metal-bending of the right mudguard mount
to let the wheel turn properly again, and I think the wheel may be slightly bent - the brakes now
rub unevenly as it turned, and they didn't before the B***** Minded W***** hit me. However, it was
still rideable to get me to work and back and I'll check it properly tomorrow.

    Oh well.

  2. Dammit all to hell, I don't live in Surrey so I can't go out and examine silver BMWs. It would give
me the greatest of pleasure to meet the chap who was driving and possibly some work to the NHS. If
anyone finds the cretin, give him one for me. No, make that two.

V glad you're ok Ian, and sorry to hear about the damage.

Bloody lunatic, still, shows another advantage to trike riding. Hope they catch him and cut his

Nasty. I take it you didn't get his number, though doubtless you'll be keeping an eye out for the
swine. There seem to be more of these traffic islands and other assorted pinch points than ever.
They seem to be designed to give motorists a choice between slowing down and killing a cyclist.

  5. Glad you are okay Ian. The Paving Slab Fairy has put a curse on the driver of the Big Motorised
W*nk. If it's male, his gonads will shivel & drop off and if it's female, no amount of botox
injections will save her from becoming a prune.

On a more serious note - I hope the driver is found and charged with leaving the scene of

Clearly a case for forcible removal of goolies. The trouble is, you're always too busy trying to
stay alive to get the numbers of twunts like that. I remember when I was run off the road earlier
this year, the [censored] didn't even slow down.

A plague on those who consider that 15 seconds of their time is worth more than the rest of someone

I hate these traffic islands....so often I wonder of the consequences as I approach these things and
the car behind decides it's a good idea to up the speed and get past 'just in the nick of time'
    before the world ends.

    Dangerous stuff.

  11. We had a traffic island pinch point recently installed in our village. While cycling through this, I
make a point of indicating that I am moving out from the kerbside, then I occupy the centre of the
lane until I have cleared the choke point, signal left and move over to allow traffic to pass giving
a friendly wave as I do. I also wear hi-visibility clothing every time I cycle. Seems to work.

Yeah, the local city council spends a fortune on green tarmac and other cycling friendly (not)
farcilities then goes and builds pedestrian refuges that are a menace to cyclists. (Making things
better for peds is fine but not if it increases danger to cyclists, in some instances "by-passes"
are created for bikes, but not many).

Agreed. IME you're just as likely to be run off the road by a middle aged *lady* in a Micra as a
someone in a Beemer. I think the problem is that like cyclists running red lights for some reason
    the Beemer driver attracts attention.

Glad to hear you're ok Ian.

It was heading towards Cobham. Might have been going to the A3 or M25 and therefore on to
    almost anywhere.

This one was an oldish large one. I'd go for two models ago 7-series if forced to pick, but I didn't
get the chassis number to confirm that, and I might be +/- a model or two (in age or range - it
might have been a newer 5, for example).

I didn't get the whole number plate, no. I don't want to be too specific on how much I got.

As regards looking out for it, yes I am. I took a walk around teh car-parks of Cobham on Friday
lunchtime but didn't see it. I'll be carrying a camera for teh next few days as well, for purposes
of photographing mysterious scrapes on cars, should I see any!

Forgot to mention - the front seat passenger (female, seventies, looked a bit like my wifes
grandmother) just sat and looked blankly straight at me through the whole thing (from about a foot
away - ie, as my wheel was scraping down her door). She seemed to think barging people off teh road
was an entirely normal part of modern driving.

Agreed. Assess the pinch point in advance and if it looks dodgy fill the space so there's no
question of cars being able to pass. Some will still try it though.

I'd rather be hooted at than mown down, or to put it another way: better Hoeyed than mowied.

I had a collision (my first for a few years) a couple of nights ago - a car pulling out of a side
road at the same time as I was passing it. This was despite high visibility clothing and 20W of
halogen light (angled down, but with glow ring). Apparently its a common occurance on the road in
question. There are a lot of moving light sources from a nearby main junction which may mask a bike
between it and the driver at the side road??

Fortunately not hurt - road was slippy enough for me to just skid sideways with it and nothing was
coming the other way close enough so I kept my balance, although I used the full width of the road
to do it. (OK, minor muscle pull due to sudden strain of rebalancing, better now)

Looking forward to the trike for more stability in these situations, but whatever the highway code
has to say about flashing lights, its going to be both lumicycles on the boom and flashing white
LEDs on the mudguard or mirror mounts. That _should_ make me visible. Also wondering where I can get
clear flag poles and if anyone's had any luck mounting a high brightness LED at the bottom of one
(lightsaber effect), or if I'd be better gluing some LEDs to the top and running a wire down the
    pole to the lumicycle battery.

hmmm, quick digression... I'm sure I've seen the below work, but have forgotten too much about
    electronics.

13.2V |---\/\/\/\---|>|-------------------|>|---------| 0V Hi Bri Flashing White Red Hi Bri
forward rear or pair, high brightness red rear, plus small flashing red pointing sideways.

Erk! Maplin's flashing LEDs want a forward voltage of 9V. Hopefuly they don't need 55mA to run.
Farnell's white (order 993864) takes 20mA at 3.6V. They also have internally current controlled
flashing ones which presumably can be seriesed with others, as long as the white LED above allows
enough current to pass when off to drive the chip on the flashing one, and the chip on the flashing
doesn't draw enough current when off to light the white one, and doesn't mind its supply voltage
    fluctuating a little.

In this case I was wearing class 3 hi-vis, and was well out from teh kerb. The car went further into
teh oppositte lane than its own in order to get the bonnet alongside, then pulled sideways while I
was level with teh front axle.

After first contact I moved (well, was bounced - after being hit with a ton or so of steel I can't
guarantee how much of my road positioning was planned and how much was in response to taking what
manouvers were necesary to stay upright and not under someones wheels) left as far as I could go,
but the car kept coming, striking again and this time scraping me down the side.

In summary - sometimes no matter what you do right, the pillocks will still hit you. Wearing
high-vis, and being well out from the kerb emphatically does not always waork.
