saddle or seat?

Saw an argument on another bike forum where some schmuck insisted they were called seatbags, not saddlebags -- "saddlebags are for horses" he sez -- yet the thing yer butt touches was still called a saddle in his opinion.

Me, I just want consistancy. Calling it a "seat" does make sense because there seems to be universal consensus that the frame part is called the "seat tube", and at least 99.9% of us call the thing in between the seat tube and the seat/saddle the "seat post". So "seat" should win by a landslide.

And yet, the phrase "bicycle seat" calls to mind countless purile National Lampoon jokes, so I suspect "saddle" was deemed less likely to make someone throw up a little in their mouth when they had to contemplate buying a new one.

seat, saddle, azzmitt ... call it whatever you want.

Reminds me of folks who say "saddle bag" to refer to panniers. I always think they're talking about the little bags that go on your saddle (seat?!) rails. And then, there are these...

Well, for me the question boils down to this: I'd let really like to toss a saddle on Mila Jovavich and give 'er a go.

When I was taught recumbents have seats and diamond frames have saddles I should have asked if I should call it a saddle tube and saddle post now I am confused again😕

I bolt my saddle onto a seatpost. I also park my car in the driveway and drive it on a parkway. You got a problem with that?

back to the argument, if we start calling it saddle post now to me it would sound stupid.

It's because [most] bicycles have seats, and a lot of people who think they know the difference between a seat and a saddle, really don't. On a saddle, your legs extend to the sides, not in front.

Horses have saddles; Draisienne bicycles have saddles.
Modern bicycles have seats, but strangely enough, a "banana seat" is really a saddle....
Antique motorcycles had seats, but modern motorcycles have saddles.

My kids all ask me to "raise the seat on their bikes".

there's an (almost) interesting distinction on Sheldon Brown's site, saying something like: a seat (or chair, or whatever) supports all someone's weight, but a saddle is something that shares the load with our feet on pedals or stirrups
