At the risk of asking what must be an FAQ ("what do you guys think of
this?"😉, here's my question.
I currently have an Apollo CX10s (yes, Halfords, you can stop laughing
now). However, I'm rather sick of being overtaken by octagenarians on my
local cycle path (I may not be in great shape, but I'm not /that/ unfit)
and I'm looking at getting something a bit better.
I'll be doing about 5 miles each way, 5 days a week. Slight incline on
the way back for most of that distance - not particularly noticeable on
foot but very noticeable on the Halfords bike.
My main criteria are:
- Costs no more than £300
- Not going to fall to bits in normal use.
- Flatten the incline on the way back as much as is reasonably possible.
- Faster - the gearing on the Apollo is 14-28 / 48-28 and I'm looking for
a slightly wider range.
- There's 2 years wear on the apollo and it's got a freewheel rather
than a cassette. By the time I've replaced the rear axle, probably the
rear wheel, fitted a buh, cassette, replaced the chain and got it all
lined up I'll have spent the better part of £80-100 and I'll still have
a cheap nasty bike. The phrase "good money after bad" springs to mind.
- More enjoyable to ride. I don't know if it makes any sense but I just
feel on the Apollo that I'm fighting a constant battle to keep the damn
thing going.
I'm looking at a Ridgeback Comet. My LBS (Bike Bristol, Queens Avenue)
is offering it at retail price but will include free servicing for life
(No doubt that's labour only, and I don't know if they make up for that by
charging silly prices for parts - I wouldn't be surprised if they do).
Before I hand over my cash, has anyone any thoughts (including "Dear
God, don't do that because..."😉?
