Tandem Chains??

7 & 8 speed chain are the same thing.

I use the shorter version on a couple bikes with no complaints.

You'd get better wear and shift response with a 7-speed 7.3mm chain.
I'd suggest one with a snaplink such as the KMC.

For the timing chain, you'll need 1.5 (practically, two) of whatever
chain you prefer - stainless steel, chromed, black, cheap, track or road
it matters not.

except for the width.

Traditional width Seven chains 7.8mm don't offer snaplinks, 7.3mm sevens
do. Eights at 7.1 are skinny enough to drop off between the top roller
and cage plate on many classic rear changers and between rings on some
classic cranks. There's no price difference so why not use the right chain?
