  1. I guess my history as a BMX hack is coming through to bite me again,
but I've never heard of "replacement rivets", "peening", "reusable
rivets" or any of that until I got my new Park chain tool. In my
experience from years ago, master links broke, so we all just stopped
using them and used chain tools to put on and remove our chains. I
believe everyone was using KMC single speed chains at the time. I
carried this over to MTB and my ss road bike as well.

I just opened up my handy new park chain tool and was flipping through
the instructions when it hit me. Shimano & Campy require a special
replacement rivet. SRAM, KMC & Wipperman use master links. Some
unnamed others use reusable rivets. I did a bit of research and it
seems there are issues with peening on some reused rivets.

What am I missing? Are chains really failing due to rivet reuse? Am
I the only one reusing rivets? Who makes these chains with reusable
rivets? Maybe I need to purchase a half dozen Shimano replacement
    rivets?

They are more properly called pins than rivets, as the pins' ends are
not peened over to retain them in the chain.

In modern chains for derailer-equipped bicycles, the pins are a tight
interference fit in the holes. Reusing them will crack or deform the
metal around the hole and will often lead to a broken chain because of
the side loads imposed on it as it is forced from sprocket to sprocket.

You can use openable ("master"😉 links in a Shimano chain. They are not
like the "master" link in a BMX chain. If you elect to use the special
replacement pins, don't push them out to open the chain; push out one of
    the original pins.

This stuff only applies to derailleur chains. All the single-speed
chains I've used have the old style design that is stronger, so the pins
can be re-installed without damaging or being damaged by the side
plates. This only applies to 1/8" chain, since 3/32" chains are really
    derailleur chains.

On the other hand, I have never broken a decent master link, so maybe
your experience will vary from mine.

"Business!" cried the Ghost. "Mankind was my business. The common
welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and
benevolence, were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but
a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!" --Dickens,

I've been reusing them for many thousands of miles and have not had
any problems except for breaking the tips of Rivoli chaintools.

I reuse them too, but I get a feeling that there's been a change in
derailleur changes in the last 30 years I'm not attune to.

FYI - I've never bent those pins when I made sure the tool was
properly lined up before driving the pin out.
