Gravity induced time dilation

  1. I think modern physics has a fair bit to say about this effect, and believe
    it can offer an explanation for some common experiences of bike riders.

    Viz : presumably most people have noticed that some sections of road/track
    take an absolute age to get from one point to another, yet the reverse
    journey appears to take no time at all.

    I believe this can be explained using modern relativistic physics - what's
    happening is the gravity field is making time perturb as you travel along
    the road. This is a field effect, so the direction of crossing the field
    lines is important, and explains why the phenomenon reverses when you cross
    the field lines the other way.

    The more field lines you cross, the greater the time-dilation effect. The OS
    have carefully provided an approximation of these field lines, which can be
    convenient - the brown lines which claim to be contours can also be used to
    estimate the effect on our mental clocks.

    (This theory was first brought into life for me somewhere near Stockdale
    farm, where we turned round due to it raining and returned to Settle).

    Though I've had a similar effect in the very flat, no brown lines, Carse
    of Gowrie. Oddly, the Met Office had lots of /black/ lines on their
    maps that same day though, though nothing much to do with gravity.

    So perhaps it's just a lines on maps problem?

    (Alan's could have been a not being able to work a clock problem?)

    Apparently there's a similar but variable effect that is charted by the
    Met Office.

    I find the problem is easily solved if you do a (x,y,z)->(x,y,-z)
    coordinate tranformation at the minimum point and then reverse it when
    you reach the maximum point. From thereon its downhill all the way ;-)

    My mother once told me it was her childhood ambition to implement
    this when she grew up. But girls of her generation didn't
    usually get firsts in engineering or physics, so it wasn't
    until later in life that she acquired the relevant background.
    And by then, she'd given up cycling (for no good reason).

    It seems the field lines of greatest effect are conveniently marked on
    OS maps with a black chevron. Round these parts we have a peculiar

    827, http://tinyurl.com/2fp8as) where the chevrons point both ways on

    There is a definite spatial anomaly in Bristol here:

    You have the options of getting to Tyndall Avenue from the top of Park
    Street by either cycling up the long steep hill of University Road or
    you can cycle along Queen's Road, Tyndall's Park Road and Woodland which
    is flat all the way.

    Hmm - On a tour of Holland, after I'd been using a bike for about 4 months
    after a 40-year break, it seemed to be ever-so-slightly uphill (the horizon
    seemed just that little bit higher than it should have been) from Stavoren
    to Emmen via Groningen. As we continued further, still climbing
    imperceptibly, in the general direction of That Vervloekt Place We Couldn't
    Avoid, we came to the top of a bloody great hill that was about a couple of
    miles and descended what seemed like several thousands of feet (couldn't
    have been, of course, 'cos Everybody Knows that Holland is as flat as a
    pancake).

    Suffice to say that we were very glad indeed that we chose our circuit that
    way round 🙂

    Footnote: All the components of my £99 SHS were thoroughly worn out after
    that tour; there were graunching noises from all the bearings, which, on
    inspection, proved to be hemispherical lumps of some oddly-coloured
    material which had ground away the races on both wheels, the pedals and the
    BB too. Nice frame, though, and a good fit, so I've spent a small fortune
    since making everything very nice 🙂

    Why is it that it's much cheaper to buy stuff from Germany than from the UK?
