Continental Carbon Black?

  1. Did they just re-discover carbon black? ...and is particle size relevant
    when everything is melted, extruded, or otherwise bonded together?

    Continental introduces Black Chili tread compound

    The recent North American Handmade Bicycle Show was a bastion of tradition
    and classic styling, but that didn't stop the folks from Continental from
    showing off its new high-performance rubber compound dubbed Black Chili.

    The new material incorporates rubber compound particles as small as 10nm in
    diameter (otherwise known as 0.00000001m, or really, really, really tiny),
    or roughly ten times smaller than what is typically used. Continental claims
    that Black Chili delivers the ultimate combination of tire characteristics:
    the smaller particles yield more points of contact with the road surface
    (offering enhanced grip), are more tightly bound to each other (reducing
    wear), and the resultant structure is more flexible (lowering rolling
    resistance).

    Black Chili will find its way into both road and mountain tires, including
    the Grand Prix 4000S (black tread only), Grand Prix Supersonic, Digga,
    SpeedKing Supersonic, and Explorer Supersonic.

    particles set free as a result of repeated severe breaking into corners on
    an alpine descent?

    The severe breaking occurs on the way /out/ of the corner, when your
    exit tangent differs markedly from that of the road.

    For colored tires, they had to use something other than carbon
    black..found that silica was slippery..back to the future.

    The only thing they're doing different is using smaller than normal
    particles. But that's good enough for advertising.

    One of the big hits against carbon black is that it may cause asthma in
    heavily trafficked areas. Given the classical definition of "respirable
    particles" is 1-10 micrometers, I'm not sure how to evaluate this latest
    variation. If all the carbon black is, say, 10-100 nm (after all, it
    does say "as small as 10 nm), making this the new standard in car tires
    might be a good thing, as the smaller particles will not be trapped as
    efficiently in the lungs, and exhaled.

    But as far as air pollution from tires go, bicycle tires are so far down
    in the noise as to be negligible. When the other 97% of traffic has 2-9
    times as many tires, a whole lot larger, and driving (on average) many
    times further than the bicycle traffic, you're not going to see any
    change in air pollution profiles. Even in alpine areas.

    that's not a good summary. it's more like silica costs more and
    requires not just the silica, but organo-silanes to keep the rubber
    together, both of which are a good deal more expensive than carbon &
    rubber. silica reinforced rubber can offer the same dry traction as
    carbon reinforced rubber, and better wet traction, both for lower
    rolling resistance. the modern small particle carbon rubbers have
    however done a lot to catch up [although they're not quite there], and
    are cheaper - it's a price-competitive alternative.

    Achieving that balance between rolling resistance, wet traction and
    wear in a bicycle tire using silica and special rubber compounds
    seemed like a waste of time/money to me when carbon black had no real
    drawbacks -- except, AFAIK, rolling resistance. It has better wear,
    and I wonder if the improved rolling resistance using silica and
    hard(er) rubber compounds really makes a difference in bike tires that
    have thin casings, small foot prints, etc. I also wonder whether that
    much care is taken in getting the balance just right in bicycle tires.
    I have had some pretty slippery silica tires over the years (and,
    actually, some carbon black tires that were not that grippy either).
