    By climbing or for climbing?

  3. thanks for your reply

i think it s more effective for me to keep a steady high HR by climbing instead achieve it on a flat road

  4. Given that HR is linked to work and exertion. So for the same HR whether going flat or going up-hill, the physical exertion should be the same.

I'd have to agree with sogood in terms of using the word "effective" if you put out the same power or same effort measured with RPE or HR the intervals should be equally effective. I do think it's a lot easier and takes less mental effort to hold long hard efforts on slight to moderate uphills. The hill makes it easier to stay engaged and I don't have to hold the same mental focus to avoid slacking off. That doesn't make the hills anymore effective in terms of training adaptations, just makes it easier for me to stay focused during the on intervals.

    Just my 2 cents....

  6. Hills make you feel challenged it's you against the hill. Flats tend to make you slack off there is something about doing >20mph that makes you feel like you are pedaling hard enough. But I have to say there is no interval that I can do accurately by heart rate.

For me it's only rest intervals 🙂 ...

My coach has me doing hill intervals tuesday and intervals on the flats on thursdays. So I do one of each during the week.
