Yesterday I was recommended by two club mates to start using my trainer more often. I was just wondering if anybody knew of a good, sturdy and cheap wheel/tyre combo that would be perfect for the job?

Trainers eat up nearly any tire. Continental does make a trainer specific tire but it is not cheap (around $40 USD). If you have an old wheel to dedicate for the trainer, then I would just use the cheapest tires you can find and conceed that they will wear out and ride them on the trainer until you can nearly see the tube or it starts to slip too much.

Continental trainer tires don't wear out nearly as quickly as normal tires. Has to do with the material they are made with.
Bontrager hard case tires are another very good tire for the trainer. Very thick, and made with kevlar.
