lacing patterns

  1. What are the respective advantages and disadvantages of 1x, 2x, 3x? Does more crosses provide
    greater strength, all else being equal? What are the benefits of different patterns on
    drive/nondrive sides of a rear wheel? If I'm a lightweight rider building a 28h rear wheel for
    non-racing road riding, is 2x or 3x "better?" Thanks.

  2. Some points...

    1. The more crossings, the less stress on the hub.

    2. Some hubs are designed for radial (0 cross) lacing and do just fine.

    3. The drive side spokes on a rear wheel have much greater tension than those of the the non-drive
    side. You can radially lace the non-drive side and save weight without sacrificing durability.

    4. If I were choosing between 2x and 3x then I'd go for the 3x because the weight savings is too
    minor and the 3x is better for the hub.

    "the Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt has your answers.
    Durability of all the wheel elements is involved.
    The number of crosses is dependent upon hub flange diameter as well as number of spokes.
    If it's for non-racing road riding rear wheel, why would you use anything less than 32 spokes 3x?

  4. The holy grail for torque transmittihg wheels is "maximum lever arm". The crosses that allow spokes
    to exit the hub close to tangentially produces this largest lever of the hub vs the rim. We stray
    from this principle only when overriding factors dictate. Exception example: When I lace an
    American Classic rear with its 66mm spoke circle and an annoyingly placed right flange,I lace 2X
    elbows out to get more lateral displacement (for less dish). The large flange still nets a large
    lever and the 2X is better for the elbows out design. Generally speaking: 20-24-2X 28-32-3X 36-3or
    4X 40-4X etc. Tom

    More corsses mean a stronger wheel, generally. If you are worried about using a 28h rear, lace three
    cross but lace head out to reduce spoke to flange overlay.

    3 cross won't hurt, may help, lace head out for the puling spokes, but if the rim is fairly beefy, 2
    cross should work as well. Stay away from 1 cross, that's just plain dumb.
