  1. could one of the resident experts tell me, can you use a crank set indicated "9 speed" with a 7/8
speed chain? I wasn't sure if the spacing on the 9 spd. is closer between the rings, and if the
    chain would rub. Thanks.

From Peter White Cycles website: [1]

"These [TA Zephyr] chainrings are spaced for nine or ten speeds. If you use them with an eight or
seven speed drivetrain, you should simply use a nine speed chain. The nine speed chain will shift
just as well as a wider eight speed chain in back, but will prevent the chain from rubbing on other
chainrings in front. I have found Sachs nine speed chains to be just as tough and durable as eight
speed chains, so there's really no reason not to use them.

The Zephyr cranks can be used with other brands of chainrings if you need eight speed chainring
spacing for front STI indexing. Rear STI indexing won't be effected. You can also re-space TA's nine
speed chainrings to make them compatible with eight speed STI front shifting."

When I upgraded the stock Dotek crankset on my Rocket I used a Shimano 105 triple along with the original Shimano HG 50 8 speed chain and the setup works flawlessly.
