  1. I haven't used my $300 mag trainer in ages due to the extreme boredom
    that sets in
after about 3 minutes into the padaling. Unless there is a harem of
    nymphs swarming by
to look at I don't picture myself distracted enough from the lifeless
    experience provided
by that implement. And if there were a harem of nymph floating by who
    in their right mind
would be riding the trainer??? I could use suggestions on how to
    occupy/distract myself
    while I'm pedaling.
    Thanks.

P.S. On stationary bikes there are blinking lights, keyboard and HRM
    one can use to look
for bugs in the onboard software and somehow it's not as boring
    pedaling in gym.
Unfortunately, I have no space for a stationary bike in my apartment
    and the
trainer can be evicted to the balcony and won't be harmed by the foul
    weather.
Are there wet weather resistant stationary bikes geared towards the
    realities
of the japanese-like lack of affordable living space in california?

  2. DVDs are the only thing that help me.

Pedal faster and harder. Stationary bikes are optimum for increasing
conditioning performance because you have no distractions. Except I
hope you have a good fan. For $300, you might have AC. Stationary
bikes are the ultimate cardovascular machine though, and if you push
yourself you will never get bored. I'd love one myself for circuit
training in my house, which is hard to jump on a bike for 3 minutes
several times within in a twenty minute intense workout.

Other than that, Old Roads suggestion of CD's will take your mind off
and distract you if that is what you want. But you are just being
innefficient with your time by 300% depending, imo.

And I wouldn't sit on an electric appliance in the rain, but that's
just me. Get someone near you to leave in garage, so they could use it
for them and their wife (the ultimate motivation). I understand what
you are saying about high rent district. CA is is high. Or you could
put everything on your walls and make room in your tight quarters. It
will take allot of planning though. Or pedal on balcony when not
raining. It will be a workout moving it before using it, like circuit
training, lol. Good luck, you'll think of something.

I've used the following to prevent boredom:

    1. watch Big East College Basketball.

This has the limitation that there isn't always a Big East College
    Basketball game on.

    2. watch past episodes of "24"

There is enough excitement in this season to mix up the pace 🙂

    3. Buy a Kurt Kinetic Power Meter (50 bucks).

I don't know if that will work for a mag trainer, though.
It works okay for my Cycleops Fuild2.

If you have the cash, get a real power meter.
That will have the side effect of having less time for the trainer, as
you'll probably be playing with ^H^H^H^H studying the data.

Other have suggested taking a spin class somewhere with others.
Check with your LBS or local cycling group.

    have fun.

Zip ties, bait casting rod, and a nice hoagie.

  7. I have mine set up under my ceiling fan and in front of the TV. I usually
stick the remote in my jersey pocket. I either watch cable or I stick in an
inspiring DVD. Breaking Away or American Flyers usually work even though
both are now cheesy and dated.

When I ride stationary I ride rollers and music is enough entertainment for
    an hour.

  9. The complete ``Get Smart'' 5 seasons on DVD, from timelife, for $199,
    on their site.

Watch each episode twice to get an hour, new episode every day.

It'll keep you going for a few months.

Very high production values, the only show my father actually laughed
    at occasionally.

Are there any nymphs in the gym? I know that helps...

I hate trainers too, but I've eventually gotten to where I can do a
warm up, a 15min TT, and a cool down... 30 min total. Going as hard as
I can for 15 min is a good workout, and it isn't boring... though I
    wouldn't call it fun either.

Mostly balding coworkers. It's california after all.

I guess I'm in a market for an mp3 player... with a built in HRM :-)

One winter one of the cable channels was running old "Babylon 5"
episodes in the mid-afternoon. I was able to do hour stints on the
trainer getting caught up on the adventures of Sheridan, Garibaldi,
    Ivanova, Delenn, et al.

    Music

    Loud music

Loud music 'characterised by repetive beats'

Also, having lots of numbers (speed, cadence, watts, heart rate, clock...)
lets you do mental arithmetic (hr 155-160 for 5 minutes etc) that keeps me
    distracted.

Can you picture Lando Mollari pedaling away on the trainer next
to the bedful of the balding imperial consorts? I bet Cyclops
would've given an arm and leg to JMS for such a plug.

Why not just dump the trainer and go ride outside? I've never been bored
riding outside. Is the weather frightening you away? You say you are in

It's the lack of time on weekdays. I can get 20 minutes tops in the
    morning
but I live in ghetto part of a densely populated metro with no bike
    lanes near
the apartment complex. This is not a problem on weekends obviously
(the lack of bike lanes, not the ghetto part) but on weekdays riding
    around
is a recepe to [censored] a lot of people trying to get to work and
    possibly get
    mowed over.
Besides, taking in and out of proper attire is time consumed. On the
    trainer
you can pretty much ride butt naked so to speak.

I believe that term started as 'buck' naked.

Which has its own history outdoors on bikes. . .

Trainer allows for very focused training, without interruption from traffic or
    signals or other issues.

I like the Spinervals DVD's. For example, one has three 30-minute workouts that
    is really solid.
