Kailua on Oahu seems to fit all except that I don't know enough to comment on
the rented bike part

If a beach on a nice mountain lake is within your consideration, I'd
recommend either a) McCall Idaho, with Payette Lake, and lots of great
riding right there, or Stanley Idaho with Redfish Lake, with, again,
lots of great riding right there. Stanley areas is little more
dramatic, but more remote. McCall is less remote, more of a semi-
glitzy ski-town, but the rides out of each area are some of the best
you'll ever do.

Only as a spectator this year, no costume with feathers and we only
went to a couple of parties (called Fetes here). We should have made
more of an effort as it may be our last chance for a while, but we
know we'll be back (it is my wife's home country). My job is moving us
again and we may be heading back to the USofA, to HOUSTON.

What's yer timing, Dan? If you're planning to go before May, that rules out
a lot of possibilities for sitting on a beach...

Virginia Beach (our current almost-local favorite) is only really good

Fall rules out just about everything except for the Gulf Coast and maybe
California. Early winter even moreso. The east will be cooling down or
already cold. You could get lucky, but I wouldn't "bank" on it.

If you're located in the east, the Caribbean might work. I've been to
Cabarete (D.R.) and they have good watersports and good riding, although not
necessarily in close proximity. I've heard good things about Puerto Rico as
well. There's also Margarita (tougher to get to) and Bonaire. I beleive
these islands aren't really set up or suited to for decent singletrack.

Over the past 20 years, we've been to the Caribbean several times, Maui,
Haterras, Central America, and the Gorge (now live nearby). Our agenda has
always been similar - hiking, watersports, biking. If you add in a desire
to spend time on a beach, the best bang for the buck (on this criteria)
would have to be Los Barilles. Early winter would be the start of their
windy season. Of course, on our first trip to another Baja destination, we
got skunked on everyting but hiking and beach time.

Your mileage may vary.

St. Lucia- just got back. Good diving, good beaches, kite surfing, wind
surfing, biking through the rainforest (unfortunately did not get to do
that), good food!
