I'm tinkering, for no particular reason other than it's fun, with my old 10 speed from when I was a kid. I've got an old Shimano 3S internally geared hub in the wheel I'll be using, I've got the bellcrank and pushrod (NOS from eBay) but the thread on the bellcrank where the cable attaches is a bit odd. I was going to knock up an adapter to attach the cable, but threading it is proving more trouble than it's worth.
I've found some complete shifters+cables on ebay for reasonable prices (until you factor in shipping from the US that is), so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a local source where I might get a cable to suit this? I've got a shifter, just need a cable and feeling lazy so would rather buy one that works (if cheap enough) rather than fiddle around making something up.

If you are in Melbourne Bicycle recycle in south rd Morrabbin is likely to have some. I have got at least one complete Shimano 3s hub and shifter from them over the years. I have seen a couple of different types - one which clamps the cable or one which the barrel adjuster is a part of the cable. I have modified my own cables by soldering bits of brass on to make lugs to suit the shifter/ adjuster
