PBP - transport

I was going to suggest Le Havre, but either is quite doable if you can spare
the time, plus maybe a couple of days to rest either side of the big ride.
There are plenty of nice spots en route to spend the night, and it seems a
shame to go to all that effort just to make one sleep-deprived slog from the
Paris suburbs to the tip of Brittany and back.

On my first trip to Paris I rode from Bristol to Portsmouth and as far from
Le Havre as I could on my first day, and the remainder on the second. If
you're in PBP shape that should be manageable.

You don't actually say that you want to cycle there or just want to get to
Paris with the tandem and then start cycling.

European Bike Express have a drop off point at Nemours some 8O kms SE of
Paris and you could take a local train back to Paris.

Bike Express is just about the most hassle free means of getting to places
in France especially. It is inexpensive too!

That's probably the best port for a solo ride.

For AUKs (and AFAIK AUK will handle all entries and ACP will accept entries
only via AUK and we'll do this for members - still to be settled), there's
the 'Best Clubrun in the World'. It meets at Portsmouth, goes to Caen,
stops over at Evreux, then down to whichever accommodation we're using this
year. I've done it 3 times and it's good fun.
The only thing is, Noel Simpson used to 'lead' the run (as we always split
up due to getting lost soon after Pegasus Bridge, 'leading' froma tandem
trike was a bit notional) and he now won't be doing so. I hope that some
one else will take over.

The European Bike express is an interesting suggestion, but seems to be at
completely the wrong time of the week.

Channel crossing [1], get to Paris on the Saturday, flop around on the

It appears that there's a 22:00 departure from Newhaven, getting to Dieppe
at 06:00, while MartinM formerly of this parish sez that Transmanche Ferries
are going to do a new route to Le Havre as well, which is a bit nearer the
start for those planning to ride down to Paris. There's also an overnight
Portsmouth-Caen ferry, though Caen is about 80 km further from Paris than
Dieppe. I haven't been able to work out how much nearer Le Havre is, coz
the RAC Route Planner has been "upgraded" and thus no longer works. Bah!
