Dynamos forever!

A hub or good quility bottle dynamo (I prefer hub because it's trouble
free in the wet and doesn't need fiddling for good performance) and a
Lumotec or E6 headlight with standlight meaning that it stays on when
you stop moving.

You get excellent optics from either of those lights, never have to
worry about batteries, my lumotec even turns on by itself when the
light levels drop.

I believe the Shimano hub dynamo is about $150, an LED headlight and
non-flashing tail light is $100-$150 depending. Then get any flasher
that runs on AA or AAA because it's just a marker saying "bicycle" the
bright rear light is excellent to "be seen" in any weather.

I find the lights good enough for twisty unlit cycle paths on a
moonless night. If you are doing unlit roads at more than 25kmh or
offroad fast work then you may need HID lights. (Although some find 2
E6s do the job well enough.)

Oh and http://www.gearreview.com/2007_led_lights.php has some info on
various strong headlights. Not sure how many are easily available in
Oz.

Don,t know about headlights, but I just replaced the el cheapo tail
flasher with a Blackburn Mars 3.
