Yesterday I fell off my bike - my 23mm wide front tire went between the planks of a wooden bridge. I was going slow so it was nothing serious... except after the fall I rubbed my belly with my hand and felt a pronounced lump. I guess this is what a hernia is - the inside of my belly tissue had popped through my muscle wall? It was due to either the strain I put on my abdomen when falling or when trying to get back up - I think it was the latter - I was trying to sit up but at an angle so my torso was twisted at the time.
However, the strange thing is that about a minute later when I was back on my bike I went to feel the lump again and it had completely gone! No sign whatsoever. My question to any of you who might know something about this, is what should I do now - just forget about it or what?
Yep, certainly does sound like a hernia. Typically, it's a hole in your belly wall that allows your gut to easily come out and in, so it's expected to feel it sometimes but not others. When it's stuck out, then you need to get it fixed pronto.
Do this, put your hand over that same location and give a big cough when standing. If you feel something hitting your hand, then that's a confirmation. If not, still get your doctor to check it out as you may not have detected it.
