  1. I just idly strolled over to the low carb group for a curious browse. Couldn't help notice a few
    forays there recently by TC. He didn't get much support for his ideas, even over there, despite his
    trying to pass himself off as a low carber there when he has admitted here that he eats 40% of his
    calories as carbs. See what you think.

    "The mainstream *insists* (shrilly, I may add) that the Law of Thermodynamics applies to weight
    management in humans in every instance with absolutely no exceptions whatsoever. Calories-in vs
    calories-out *without exception*. It's the LAW.

    [Correct]

    Thus you only need to find one instance that contradicts it to entirely disprove its application to
    the human body in weight management.

    [So where is this exception that he keeps claiming?]

    The Law of Thermodynamics cannot be applied directly to humans because the Law only applies to
    simple, static, and, most importantly, *closed* systems. The human body is a complex, dynamic and,
    most importantly, an *open* system.

    [Persistent ignorance of thermodynamics noted]

    Calories cannot be used to accurately calculate, predict or control weight gain or loss. Calories
    mean very little when it comes to weight management in humans.

    TC"

    [Questions about a "closed system" in asdl-c were ignored by TC]

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "Absolutely. Been LCing for about 3-4 years now. Noticed it [IBS-like symptoms which have abated
    since on the diet.] almost immediately when I started.
    "Low-carb dieters eat more calories and still lose weight
    Calories mean squat. Check out this story:
    canada.comstory.html
    quote:
    "The dietary establishment has long argued it's impossible, but a new study offers intriguing
    evidence for the idea that people on low-carbohydrate diets can actually eat more than folks on
    standard lowfat plans and still lose weight."
    Now, if this is correct then it completely throws the calorie theory out the window, doesn't it?
    TC"
    [I believe this was referred to as"delusional".]
    So your point would be..... what?
    That I read and post to other groups? So?
    That critics of the low carb diet post to other groups as well? So?
    There are large numbers of people who low-carb and don't care about arguing about whether it works
    or not because they know it works or they are prepared to try it to see for themselves because they
    know by experience that low-fat diets don't work.
    Many go to the low carb forum to simply discuss their progress. Have you noticed that or are you
    only on a witch hunt against me personally? Check out the numbers that people are throwing around in
    terms of weight loss in the low-carb forum compared to the low-fat or low-calorie forum. It ranges
    from a few lbs to 50, 60 or more in the low-carb forum. But you claim that that is all water, don't
    you. Compare the numbers with those in the low fat forums, they agonize over a few lbs up to maybe
    10 or 15 lbs.
    Nice try, troll.
  3. Hi, i'm like alot of people I can't stop eating. In fact I love food, but I have an idea. If we
    could kill our taste buds and impair our sense of smell for a short time (a month or so) we would no
    longer have the desire to eat fatty foods because it would all taste the same. I could eat things I
    would normally turn my head at. I would not look forward to eating because it all tastes the same.
    It would cut down on the enjoyment of food and would cause you to only eat when your hungry and not
    overeat. Does anybody now of something safe I can take to kill my taste buds or impare my sense of
    smell? Please e-mail
    me. Thanks
  4. Once upon a time, our fellow imthemanintheboxx rambled on about "Re: Calorie problems 🙂." Our
    Sorry, I choose to answer in the Newsgroup rather than by email. I suspect you're joking, but just
    in case, I'll answer seriously.
    Your supposition that losing your sense of taste and smell would enable you to eat less is very
    dangerous - the exact opposite could happen. I know this from personal experience. *Some* people
    with loss of sense of smell do eat less, but that is not what happened to me. I had (almost) no
    sense of smell for many years, probably due to allergies (it came back without ever getting a
    definitive diagnosis.) But, I remembered what food was supposed to taste and smell like, since of
    course I had previously been able to smell food for my first 20 years of life. So, in a desperate
    and futile attempt to experience the taste of food I remembered, I kept eating and eating more and
    more. I didn't do this consciously - it took me years to figure out I was overeating in a
    subconscious attempt to taste something. Also, I found it very upsetting to have no sense of smell.
    Things felt unreal, as if the whole world were laminated in plastic. It can also be dangerous, since
    you can't smell gas leaking, burning food, etc.
    I think the opposite approach works better: become really "mindful" of the food you eat - pay
    attention to the flavor, relax and really notice your food, instead of shovelling it into your mouth
    as you watch TV (for example - I'm not saying you necessarily do that.) This enables you to eat less
    while still enjoying it a lot, and makes even a tiny piece of chocolate feel like a big treat.
    Besides, I doubt there is any way to safely impair your sense of smell temporarily; you could lose
    it forever - and that really stinks! (sorry 🙂 )
    BTW, a lot of people can really reduce their overeating simply by making a rule not to eat anything
    while watching TV. It's *very* easy to lose track of how much you're eating when you're in front of
    the tube; I think a lot of people are actually in a sort of trance state when they watch TV. I think
    that in general, eating while you're significantly distracted leads you to unconsciously substitute
    quantity for quality.
