  1. Hi all , I built a training frame up about a year ago from a bike store that I originally got my other race bike from. I was a little naive when ordering because to get my size right they just asked for the frame size which was stamped near the BB. So job done. Frame arrived and built it up but from day one it gave me back ache after about two hours of riding which was worse riding on the hoods and eased when in the drops. So as you do you try to eliminate the prob. Did everything really handlebars, stretching you name it. Even putting it against my race bike did not throw anything up. That was until yesterday, I felt such a [censored] that I missed something so simple. My race frame has a head tube which is about two inches longer than the frame that gives me back ache even thought they are the same size frames, each 54 cm. So given the two inch plus they 30mm of fork tube at the top and the and the steerer it was nigh on three inches longer. The [censored] training frame althought a 54cm is too small!!!! So of I went to the bike shops and it seems that all manufactuers of bike have their own sizing, great. I am 5'11 so on a trek I was told 56 or 58 cm which I was told was what Lance armstrong rode who is of similar hieght. I do have a stiff lower back from an injury I got from Judo so do you think that a frame size as big as those given to me would be benificial? Did Lance even ride a bike that big? Its seems massive compared to my 54cm race frame. cheers nathan

  2. Are you saying that the handlebars on your new bike are three inches lower than your "race bike" and you didn't notice?

Yes but they did not "feel" that much difference so I never botherd to check🙁 . Well I do have a stem on with an uplift so it is bit little less. But no excuse really  , so now I am after a 58 frame, more spendo😄 . nathan

Instead of blaming the training frame which had nothing to do in this process your sould be more observent.

Trying to compare yourself to LA and ride the bike he did probably will not be the best. Besides, he could tell the difference between mm. I would think most riders could easily tell the 3 inch deference from across the room.

You have no one to blame but yourself. That is unless the LBS said all 54 cm frames are the same. But a quick look at manuf. websites give dimentions of their frames. So just a bit of research could have saved you a lot of mula.

  5. Yes true only person to blame is myself, but to be honest I have only ever ridden one type of frame so did not really know that each manufacturer had there own process of determining, but you live and learn. I have seen bikes ridden with alot more radical positions but I did not take into acount my old back injury. Plus when ordering, the Lbs had all my old details , frame size ect... and just sent a cheaper aluminium training frame to match my race frame, execpt it was a horizontil frame as opposed to my sloping tube comfy frame. But its only a bike so ne need to sweat its not going to change the course of life too much, I think. cheers

  6. All you have to do is change your stem and it will solve a lot of the problem you are having. To raise your handlebars, flip your threadless stem 180 degress so it points upwards.

Trek measures their frames strangely. While most manufacturers measure from to the top of the top tube or to the center of the top tube, Trek measures to the top of the seat tube, which can make a Trek 2 cm smaller than the same sized frame from other makers.

  8. Or you could actually take the 1 minute required to read the measurements given by manufacturers and realise that buying a bike on listed frame size is absolute rubbish. Top tube length (or Equivalent top tube length on compact) is what you are after.

Putting your seat up or down is free. Stems are cheap, frames are expensive.
