  1. Hi, I have to change the bottom bracket on my Dawes Kalahari. It is
the original BB in the bike. Can anyone tell me which way I should
unscrew it. I can't shift it either way. There is a flange on the
chain side of the cartridge if that is any help. The bike is at least
5 years old, one of the original Kalaharis. TIA Gaz

Both sides undo towards the front, so CCW on the left cup and CW on the
right cup. Undo the left cup first, then the right.

I think that's maybe overdoing it a little on the copper grease, bottom

Mine is the shimano cartridge type. From what I've read some have
right and some left hand thread.

Er, yes. That's what Paul meant "towards the front", CW being "clockwise".

It depends on the frame. Yours is British so it has both as above. The
left (non-drive) side is right hand thread. The right (drive) side is
left hand thread. Each side unscrews in the sense that the cranks
    rotate when pedaling.

Oh, so you didn't mention threading then? OK.

Doesn't matter if you have a cartridge BB, the threading will be the same
unless you have an "Italian" BB (unlikely).

Just a touch - I can't remember when I last bought copper grease, but it
was a long time ago and there's still some left.

It doesn't matter - the threading in the BB will still be the same
whether it's a cartridge or cup and cone. When a bike frame is built,
it is built using a standard BB thread. (Give or take the odd Italian
    thread, which you won't have.)

Clockwise to undo on the right hand side, anti-clockwise to undo on the
left hand side. It won't be any different. If it's tight, give it some
more welly (after soaking overnight with WD40, perhaps)

Gordon Bennett! It just needs a smear off the end of a finger, not

No, the right hand side, as you sit on the bike (the side where the
chain is) has a left-hand thread. A left-hand thread is the unusual
kind, that you turn clockwise to undo. I think just a confusion of
    terminology.

That's if it's "British". "Italian" ones have (normal) right-hand
    threads on both sides.

They sometimes are difficult to shift. Penetrating oil is worth a try.
Something I've thought of doing but never had to resort to (don't know
if it would work) is try to find the drainholes under the BB and squirt
the penetrating oil in there where it might be more likely to find its
    way to the threads.

Makes no difference. If the frame has English or ISO threading, that's the
way it unscrews. French and Italian threading are now very rare, for the
simple reason that both are unreliable. And as your bike is a Dawes, it
    has English threads.

And why apply it with a brush? Put a dab on the thread from the tube and
smooth it round with a finger.

which transfers some the the acidic bio-gunge (you can tell I'm not a
biologist) from your finger into the grease, hence use of a brush.
IMHO a clean, flat, metallic implement (e.g. small spatula) would be
better, as all sorts of rubbish can accumulate in brushes.....
