Those things look more like bayonets than thorns. You need give thanks that it was your bike tires

hazard around here though since they never appear on the ground, only the tree trunks.They were planted in the 19th century around here as hedges.
Some Osage orange facts:
* the wood is bright gold in color
* the wood makes fabulous firewood- burns and burns and burns, etc. get someone else to split
it, though!
* native 'murkins are said to have used the fruit as a medicinal
* Osage orange hedges have nearly disappeared from my part of the prairie as farmers plant fencepost
to fencepost in order to get the most production from the land. hedges just reduce the bushel/acre
numbers. :^(rich, getting weepy over another of his childhood memories
