Hi! new member, first post and all. I ride for fitness/exercise, took it up 5 years ago after I transitioned from running. I have been doing a 35km circuit once a week here in Brisbane on a Giant Mountain bike I set up with street tires but have outgrown that and just bought a s/hand Nishiki road bike with the 105 flight deck group. Anyways, I wanted to give the bike a good overhaul before bought my new clipon shoes ( previously I used cages) and take her out for my rides.
Thanks to a search here I found links to shimano docs with expoded views but my shifers don't have a little screw at the top to begin the disassembly process? I want to give the shifters a light oil as they are a bit sticky. I have set up the derailers etc, just need to get into the grips now. Any advise would be appreciated, I'm mechanically wise, do most all my own maintenance but know when to cry out for help before I snap something off. HELP!!
First, Shimano levers are not desgined to be rebuilt and I highly recommend not trying it.
Next, if its used, the best thing you could do is replace all the cables & housing with some good stuff, and make sure they are lubricated to spec (might not need it). Also, if you degrease and regrease your cain it'll help, but the chain and cassette may need replacing if its 2nd hand. Replacing the cables will give you a better feel at the levers.
I wouldn't take apart the shifters at all it's not fun. What I do with sticky shifters is get the triflow lube that comes in a spray can with that skinny straw and spray it inside the shifter the drip style lube doesn't get in there at all. New cables and housing is usually a good idea and a clean chain. Good luck

Ok, I got the picture. I have the spray lube, will pump it into the shifters and put some down the cables and leave it at that for now. Chain and cassette are in good order, they were just filthy.
