I thought the cloud was the engine burning oil to start with, but seeing
it slide back down the hill, I think it's at least partly burning rubber
from the sliding tyres. I don't know what the towing weight limit for a
Renault 5 is, but it's clearly _massively_ overloaded with that caravan.

Could have been very scary if cyclists had been on the road behind it
as it slides back.

Oil is normally in the crank case and cylinder head, it can leak past
the piston rings or valve seals and get into the combustion chamber.
The clouds in the video look much more like water vapour than smoke to
me, and you'd expect the car to overheat badly in that situation,
blowing vapourised coolant out of the pressure relief valve (if it
worked) or through leaks in the cooling system (if the pressure relief
valve didn't work or the plumbing was already dodgy).

When the bits that move (valves, pistons etc) or the bits that they move in
(valve guides, cylinders, etc) get worn, then they tend to flop about a
little, and there is too much clearance between valve stem and valve guide,
or between piston and cyclinder. Oil reaches the parts it shouldn't (i.e.
the combustion chamber) and gets (usually partially) burnt when the
petrol/air mixture fires. The resulting blue oily smoke is squirted out the
back onto following cyclists.

This, of course, is why cyclists overtake buses on the inside.... many buses
had exhaust on offside. [1]

[1] many newer buses have exhaust straight out the back... often at the
nearside. Because the chassis and engine design emanates from the other side
of the *English* Channel.. Where they drive on the wrong side of the road.
So the exhaust is away from the pavement in those countries, but not in
ours.

It does keep your legs warm though when you get stuck behind a bus in
traffic.
