Not that I've been assimilated or anything (I swear!), but I have taken the plunge. I just brought home my new ride, a Surly 1x1 built up nicely with 517's, Paul Hubs, a King headset, LX V's, a SID and some other nice stuff. I've already ridden it a few times, and I think taking out an SS on a regular basis will make me a better rider. I still plan on riding my Epic a bunch, and I just had a fantastic ride on it tonight with the LBS guys. Anyway, I thought I'd tell you folks and show it off a little. Welcome to the machine, as you have been assimilated.
Not that I've been assimilated or anything (I swear!)

Thought so - assimilated. It has been survived before, however, so don't give up all hope.
Steve "congrats, BTW - nice bike..... but what are those things with the front wheel between them?"

Very nice.
What's the saddle like, btw? I'm thinking of trying one of the WTBs.

Why not just find the same gear ratio as a single speed on your mountain bike and not shift??? Just kidding, nice bike...

Silly person, they've bought into the hype. Besides that, your option is entirely too simplistic. Haven't you received the memo regarding the upcoming name change of the group from ALT-MOUNTAIN-BIKE, to ALT-ADULT- BMX...if not, it will be forthcoming.

I've had the same thought, but it's not like that. I'd shift eventually. This forces me to push into a whole new threshold. It's kind of weird, but in a good way.

I disagree. I would have "bought into the hype" if I had just blindly bought an SS because others do it (and maybe it appears this way). What I did was test ride this bike a number (I think that number is four) of times before committing. I liked it made an offer on it and the former owner and I had some trouble coming to an agreement we both felt was fair. I kept the bike for a while and continued to like it more and more with each ride. I started to stop by the garage for something and would just look at it's beautiful simplicity. I knew I had to have it.
Now it might have been the buzz around SSing that initially sparked my interest, but I've seen first hand how much stronger my friends who have started SSing have become. I want to be that strong. This is how to do it. In the mean time I realized that it's really fun. Much more fun than I initially thought it could be. There may be some hype floating about, but I didn't buy it (my posts will illustrate this). I'm also not saying it's for everyone. I just made an informed decision that I'm now happy I made.

It's a wonder you ever even found alt.mountain-bike, doof. Keep humping away with your long distance humping, humpy. You wouldn't know a real bike if someone ran you over with one.

So there, smarty-pants.
Matt
Well, at least you acknowledge that the "HYPE" provided the initial spark. Your post show you made a well informed, thought provoking purchase (x-tra points!) One that was made by you, for you. But only after seeing the "hype" in all its glory. The part about your friends strength increase was a "pro" not a "con" in the list. But only after you were bitten by the hype...
But its o.k. At the end of the day, you're satisfied, and thats the bottom line, right?
Dave (your memo about the group name change is in ther mail!)
