  1. Steroid use in cycling isn't very likely.

    Okay, dude...

  2. he only says that to throw you off his own trail... wait till you read the latest report on the
balco scandal- "the name of unknown biker 'kurgan gringioni' has been found in numermous entries of
the bay-area company's ledger... one secretary remembers distinctly that gringioni frequently came
to the office to pick up un-marked packages, he came in many times with another unidentified man
who, reportedly, on one occassion asked the female secretary to, 'hold my beer and watch this...'
before he proceeded to unzip his own trousers with his teeth while seated in the office..."

Sure, but not at the highest levels. Doping which improves oxygen carrying capacity is much more
effective than 'roids. If a cyclist at the highest level is going to risk doping, is he/she going to
use the best available methods? or not?

At the 12k Dream level, you are correct. A 6 week cycle of EPO/Aranesp/Procrit/Oxyglobin/Whatever is
    expensive. Roids, OTOH, are cheap.

The other side of this is; How many dreamers are going to put in the training miles and intensity
to benefit from the added recovery provided by steroids. Used to laugh a lot in the gym at "Joe
Goober" pretending to train, but was going to get "BIG on a program." There are a lot of things out
there to help you adapt, but getting better is a result of adapting to stress, without the stress
there is no adaptation, but you can't tell this to the low end, quick fix dreamers. Bill C

  5. i heard that the entire reason for this thread is that "kurgan gringioni" is selling access to the
"hold my beer and watch this..." trick on an internet [censored] site... they used to be good freinds, but
now this has caused a major feud between the two since that "asswipe" kurgan isnt sharing any of the
money with his triple x, rubbery, side show freak ex-budy...

the steroid thing is only being alluded to because they are both gonadotropine deep in it over at
BALCO- ratting out one means going down yourself... but profiting from your self-loving, limber
freinds?... thats just plain jerky... i know we are all jealous dude, but dont let it ruin a
    freindship!

Probably true for steroids, don't know about that, but not true for EPO: use it and you will perform
    better (or die).

Imagine, you break the UK 25 mile itt record and die in your sleep that night. What a way
    to go out!!

Ah, maybe not even true for steroids:
outside.away.com200311 drug test 4.html (see photo subscript). Btw,
this is part 4 of a report on volunteering for an extensive drug program to increase athletic
performance, under the supervision of, ahem, Dr. Jones. Interesting reading (despite the fact that
    he's no racer).

And available. I grew-up in a rural town of about 5000. Fifteen years ago when I was in high school
you could get steroids. When I was home for Christmas this year visiting an old friend he was
telling me how big his lifting buddy (a guy who was a pencil-neck in high school) was getting taking
steroids. And that if I wanted them, he could get them for me.

    Dumbass -

What he's saying is that an abuser still has to train (introduce stress). The steroids aid in
recovery (the body adapting to stress).

Here's a snippet from the arcticle.

    <begin>

"Within three weeks, my hematocrit level had risen to 48.3. By this time, my testosterone levels
had shot up to 900 nanograms per decaliter, from a previous mark of 280. (My starting level was
just below normal.) My HGH had increased only slightly, which Dr. Jones found unusual. He upped my
HGH dosage to 1.2 IU a day, speculating that the long hours I spent training might be keeping the
    level down.

Despite these measurements, I remained skeptical about all the drugs until March 29, when I rode an
event along the central coast of California, the Solvang Double Century, at what for me was a fast
and hard pace, finishing in around 11.5 hours."

    <snip><end>

Dude is doing all those drugs and does his Double Century in 11.5 hours. LOL.

Sure, that's what I thought and the article is hardly scientific but the subtitle was: "using the
anabolic steroid Deca, Stevens added 12 pounds of muscle—without lifting a weight". Whatever.

Miles or kilometers? In miles it's still not very fast, but probably respectable for a 50-yr old,
depending on the terrain and conditions.

There were 325 finishers in this year's Solvang Double and one third of them were under 11.5 hours. The actual distance was 191 miles. I can understand the motivation to dope up to win major races, but not to crack the top third of a cyclo-tour.

He did it to find out as a reporter how much it would improve performance for "an average Joe". It
was an interesting article. Also, IIRC he was on a tandem for the double.

It's in miles, but it's pretty slow (27.8 km/h). I know 50 year olds around here that would knock
off a double century in under 10 hrs, with a stop for a couple of Duvels along the way.

I don't like this Dr. Jones character. He reminds me too much of my evil twin.

A tandem give you more of a boost than those drugs will...if it's not too hilly :-)

I can't believe he got up to 210 pounds (I don't care what his bodyfat was) and thought that this
was a good thing for an ultra-endurance event. He should have tried track sprinting with all that
    [censored] he was taking.

What did the winner of PBP do this year? 42 hours or something? This guy, riding with a supposedly
fitter partner on a tandem, did 76 hours. What a joke. Who knows what he could have done if he'd
used all the time visiting the good doctor to actually train.

If he'd done the right thing and stuck to something that actually works (EPO) he might have been
really surprised. See Rob Wilson's comments in:
    cyclingnews.comauschamps03

I like the part about "It's just been a nine-week whirlwind". Jeez.

I should have mentioned that it was a hilly course according to the author.

Yes, it is an interesting article. My point was only that I couldn't understand the motivation for an average Joe to experiment - in the end neither could the author.

He did PBP on a tandem, Solvang Double on a single.

??? I know many who would ... it'd be the next step to going pro (in their minds). When in a rut ...
no matter how deep ... people look for short cuts and deny their physical limitations ...
supplements/enhancement drugs would not sell as much if only the top 10 went for them;-)
