    it can happen, but its very very rare. the point is, residual stress
    /can/ approach yield /inside/ a piece of material, but unless there's a
    flaw such as a welding crack or a sufficiently large inclusion, it will
    /never/ nucleate there, only on the relatively unstressed outside surface.
