  1. I am doing a survey on helmet use for my Statistics class. Quick replies would be greatly appreciated.

I was mountain biking with a new forum friend in Manila when he asked if I always had a helmet with me when I travel. I answered yes and thus came up with this poll.

  2. You might want to check out this thread. It was an earlier poll about helmet use -

  3. Almost always wear a helmet. If it gets below 35F on the road bike I just use a knitted hat. On my MTB, if it's hot and muggy, no helmet.

Thank you. I should have done a search first. I still blame it on the jet lag.🙂

  5. Thanks to all who participated. I combined two poles that I put online and came up with close to 90 percent of serious bicyclists wear helmets. The results are close to what I experience in real life.

  6. I was hit by a car. Fractured skull. Very lucky the car wasn't going too fast. Never go cycling without a helmet now. I know two cyclists who bought helmets after my crash.

  7. I don't ride on streets so I don't wear a helmet...

Hitting the ground works differently when not on the streets?

I've never fell off a bike before...

It's your choice, and it's your head.

I've come off my bike a few times and never hit my head - luckily (I was wearing a helmet every time). My worst crash resulted in a smashed femur and 3-4 months off work - you have no time to react if you are going down, and you have no chance to protect your head.

You may want to read some of the stories in this thread.

Glad to hear you survived the crash.

Did the bike survive the crash?:p

  14. I will not ride without a helmet...tbh I never understood why you wouldn't wear one..better to look a bit goofy going down the road than to look good in a coffin!

  15. I always wear a helmet. I have been in a couple of minor accidents and if I fall and strike my helmet hard, I always buy a new helmet. Almost two years ago I was in a fairly bad accident while I was riding into work in the morning. I was wearing my helmet, but I have no memory of the accident. I have no memory of the week that I spent in an ICU, the week I spent in a step-down unit, or the first couple of days I spent at the next hospital. There are a bunch of cracks in the styrofoam in the back of my helmet and there was a cut on the back of my head from the styrofoam. I had a couple of orbital fractures in the front of my head, some fairly severe bleeding in my brain, seven fractured ribs, and a punctured lung. I spent about a month and a half in hospitals and about seven months on limited duty.

I was hurt very badly, but if I hadn't been wearing a helmet I would have died.

  16. I grew up not wearing a helmet, there were'nt any back in the 70s/early 80s. I had some knarley wrecks back then, plenty of scars for it. I used to dirt jump bmx without a helmet back then........and was lucky I never had a head shot. Plenty of blood, but most of the damage was to knees and forearms. Now that I have two kids, I'd still prefer to ride without a helmet, but I wear one as an example to my kids. They NEVER ride without one, bike, skateboard, inlines.... they automaticly put one on. I catch [censored] from a couple of friends when we are on the motorcycles, MO has a helmet law, but when we are in states that don't, they shed the lid. I prefer wearing one. I know the reality on a motorcycle is a helmet just means an open casket...but I still prefer riding with one. Same for the dirt and atv. I don't wear one when working in the yard or just moving materials on a job site, but if I'm trail riding or on the track, HELL yes.

  17. Since I started riding bicycles, I have always worn a helmet. I don't see how any reasonable person could believe that the cons outweigh the pros. When I was 10 years old, I hit a newly formed pothole near my house (those darn canadian winters shifting the pavement) and I went flying over the handlebars. I landed on my head, and if it werent for that helmet, I'd have had a cracked skull that day. Instead I just had some pretty bad road rash. Luckily I haven't crashed onto my head since.
