I got my SL about 14 months ago and about 9 months ago they started
shipping it with the USB downloader. I think I tried making it work
with a 3'rd party serial-USB adaptor but failed. Or it wouldn't work
with CyclingPeaks WKO+ (which BTW is infinitely superior to the
powertap shipped software, and worth every penny!). Or something like
that. And they wouldn't give it to me for free so I paid $50 here:

If you just bought it and it came with the serial downloader you might
have better luck getting the USB model for free. Or whoever sold you
the old stock should have cut you a deal.

OK Thanks! I've had it a while and have only just tried to put it on
my laptop (ie: no serial port) I'm really not keen to spend 50-100
bucks on a cable with a plug at the end... As I said, I've just got an
adaptor and I don't want to spent much more money than that.
It looks like I'll stick to using it on the descktop only. Oh well.
