I'm wanting get a Trek 520 for the wife. They come in 17", 19", so on. She's 5'4" and rides a 15" mtb. Her road bike sizing (according to rule of thumb) would be 19" (49cm)? TIA.
17" should do fine. The 520 runs a bit larger than the size would indicate. The main issue will be top tube plus stem length; the stock stem will most likely be a bit on the long side. If it's a gift and you're doing this "blind" I'd have them put on a 7 or 8cm stem. You might look into a 38cm wide bar as well; could be a 40 will work if she has fairly broad shoulders, but make sure it doesn't have a 42cm for some reason (it shouldn't, since they don't come from the factory that way).
