Using Rim Tape Question

By "rim tape" I assume you mean tubular adhesive tape, and not Velox
Fond de Jante rim tape, used to protect clincher tubes from spoke
holes.

I've used Tufo Orange (extreme temperature) tape on a couple of sets of
wheels. My main observations are that:

1) you need to be careful when you're pulling the liner after the
tire's been mounted, as it has a tendency to tear diagonally, and you
risk rolling the tire off-center when you dig the torn bit out to get
it going again; and

2) to make the re-centering process easier, keep the pressure very low,
just barely enough to make the tire round, until you're sure the tire
is centered and the tape liner is fully pulled. The tape is pressure
sensitive, and the more pressure you use, the harder it is to lift and
re-center.

That being said, I've glued many tubulars too, and I greatly prefer the
ease and cleanliness of the tape.

Note to Mark Hickey [1]: This should be "carbon fiber reinforced
polymer rim" tubular wheel.

My advice is to get a solvent brush, a can of tubie glue, either Conti,
Vittoria or Pana and use that. Old fashioned glue is the way to go,
IMO, and I ride tubies every day on my Merckx.
