OT: Too Much Snow

Don't ride them flat, always stay on one edge or the other. Riding a
shaped ski flat is asking to catch an edge.

I'll probably be skiing Monarch this weekend. I hear it got pretty nice
this week.

I hear Loveland is good. I haven't skied there but they have a good
reputation. Being high altitude the snow should stay a little fresher
longer than lover places.

I was told it is the "locals" place (no hotels, bars, etc. - you come,
ski, and go home). I may meet some folks from work there as well.

I rode a couple nights ago in the snow, and it was excellent. It was pretty
cold (-10C), but it only affected the toes. Traction was excellent.

Snow riding is some of the best riding.

Should be fun. We do both around here, though. Mtnbike the snow
around town, and ski up higher. (I also like to xc out my door during
the few days of winter we get enough snow in the neighborhoods).

After five ours on the slopes I was dead tired and called it a day.
Holy sh%t! That's much more tiring than mountain biking and I have
muscles that have never hurt before.

I know this is OT but it was a fun day on the mountain. 9F with a wind
at 13,000' that numbed me to the bone. The shaped skis are AWESOME! I
got off the lift and started cruising like I never left the sport. They
just carve so nicely. No spills at all for me and I can say that never
happened on straight skis. Granted, I kept my speed down and didn't try
anything stupid. I stayed on the blues and even hit some mogul runs.
There's nothing like skiing right onto the lift. I think I did about 15
or 20 runs before turning in.

I'm going back to Joisey next week, so hopefully the trails will be
snowless when I return (I still would rather mountain bike).

Do it. Although technically, what you get these days are shaped, but not
truly parabolic. That was an early attempt at shape skis that didn't pan
out as originally hoped. But new ski designs kick the [censored] out of the
old ones. Old (Alpine) skis are mostly just good for fences now.

Glad you have fun Mitch. I did a six hour ski tour today starting from
that lot at the top of Monarch, doing a big loop cutting through the ski
area and then back out the South end and finishing with some nice powder
turns above the road across from that lot. Big day. It was good. Damn
cold at times too.

That *was* you! I was one of those goobers on golf course XC skis down
below the highway that you and your friend passed around 1:30 pm. Your
friend had one of his skins' tip come loose just as you skied up to us.
I thought I recognized you, but I just wasn't sure enough to say.

I descended a little bit of that just above where we were on my
edgeless XC skis. Glad there were no witnesses. I was graceful like
Jerry Lewis on ice skates.

It was a bit chilly up there. Nice crispy snow though.

Ha ha! I thought you looked familiar too, but we wanted to keep moving
(due to both cold and our planned route being long).
We thought you guys seemed uneasy for some reason, like we walked up on
an argument, safety session, or something. Then we followed your tracks
and discovered you had turned around up the trail a bit.
We wound up navigating by the wrong set of power lines and got to the
pass about a half Mile below Old Monarch. So we had to walk back up to
OM on the shoulder, then we skied into the area, got a snack, and headed
up to get out the South gate near the OM summit. We skinned back up to
the very highest point and skied that top bowl just as the light was
going away. The last few turns were pretty much in darkness, but the
moon helped. I almost wanted to go for another lap by moonlight but we
had to get back to our families who were starting to wonder about us.

folk wearing camelbaks, so I think I'll do that next time. I also saw
more people wearing brain buckets than not. What's up with that? No
such thing 12 years ago. I don't think I ski hard enough to require one.

helmet? Whatever you want. It doesn't take going 60 mph and hitting a tree
to do brain damage. All it takes is catching an edge on hardpack or an
errant snowboarder, or getting smacked by the chairlift. Plus, they are
warmer in stormy weather.
