God what a weird couple of rides lately. This morning I'm coming in on
Yarra Glen/Adelaide Ave and this guy on a flat bar with TT bars shoots
past. He's doing a fair click (~40-45) and has legs like a billiard
table (no... he only has two but very large), so I jump on his wheel. I
was thinking at the time that it's too hot for a push before tonight's
crits but what the hey, good exercise. About 100 m up the road he
realises I'm on his wheel and then pull's slightly to the left. I
wasn't sure what he was doing exactly but I stuck with him and just gave
him a bit of room, thinking something was amiss. Suddenly he brakes and
I shoot past. Not a word from him, just hard braking. I continued
riding thinking he'd stopped to adjust his knicks or something.
A few moments later he burls past shouting "don't draft me mate!". The
only thing I could think of saying was "why, is there something wrong
with your brakes?". It became clear he'd slammed on his brakes to get
me off his [censored]! Thinking to myself, "what a jerk", I give him the
required space and offered him my backside and the opportunity to suck
my wheel! Fairy nuff, if he wanted to ride on his own, I'm OK with
that, he just had to ask, but to slam on his brakes with me on his wheel
(and no call of "stopping"😉 at ~45 km/h gave me the [censored]! I hope
you're reading this billiard man! You sh$t me! IF you were out to
break some record on your way to work, I would have thought having me on
your wheel would have helped immensely! And if you thought I was just
going to push you from behind, mate I'm a nice guy... I would have given
you a turn at the back! Next time lets be a bit more congenial. OK!?
Ahh... that's off my chest, now for some coffee and a hard day's work in
the lab!
