    If Im to go single-speed (with vertical drop-outs) do I need a chain-tensioner? Im going to get a
    24/7 singlespeed kit (two spacers and a 18t sprocket) but will this be ok to run without anything
    like a tensioner or rear mech?

    Buy a chain tensioner.

    More helpfully - you could keep running a rear mech with the chain real tight.

    Go ahead and try the gearing without a tensioner first. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes you get
    really lucky and don't need one.

    When you find out that you do, there are a lot of options on the market now, Surly, Soulcraft, Paul,
    a grotty old derailleur...

    Oh well, Ive ordered a DMR Tension Seeker and a 24/7 singlespeed conversion kit. That Forge complete
    conversion kit looked good though, and a nice price.
