  1. Sunday I have got my first cycling session for a three week clinical trial
run by a guy from RMIT. He came over today and dropped off the food that I
have to eat Saturday to achieve 8g/kg of carbs for my 97kg body weight.
Apparently the diet has been put together by an AIS nutritionist and there
seems to be a fair bit of food but I am sure that I will get through it.

The worst thing is that the first session is at 0800h on Sunday and I have
to fast that morning prior to starting......I generally eat within 5 min of
waking up and so I am not sure how I will go cycling on an empty
    stomach....time will tell.

I also found out a bit more about the biopsies that I have to do (8 in
total).......they use a local and then make a 5mm incision to allow the
needle to be inserted.....there could be a localised feeling of pressure as
they remove a "corn kernel sized" chunk of muscle from my lower quad....then
get adhesive dressing to stop bleeding. Sounds like fun!!!!

I am not allowed to do any training/racing outside of the designated
sessions for the trial (six days a week) but I am hoping to get out to the
Kew crits once the trial is over to see if the interval sessions have done
    me any good.

Better clean my bike tomorrow as I need to take it in to be fitted up with a
power meter hub for the first part of the trial on Sunday.

I really hope you are being well compensated - the biopsies sound like
something dreamed up by a sadist.

    Cheers,

Gags how will you cope without your 16 Weet Bix for breakfast?

I know of several people who have had them done in the 'name of science'.
Unless paid an extraordinary amount of money none would ever have it done
    again.
My partner still has the scars 10 years on!!!

Get out, while you can is my advice!

    Biopsies! Pah!

I wish they would refer to these by a more suitable term, ie: "core samples".

I've still got scars from these damn things, but at least they proved to be benign. 😉

Too late!!! I had my first session that involved biopsies this morning. Had
a local on my thigh and then a scalpel was used to make two incisions about
8mm or so long and about 40mm apart. Then had a biopsie taken from one of
these incisions......weird sensation.....sorta like pressure building up
until a sharp pain that I assume was the sample being taken. Then did 1
hour on bike at 260Watts at the end of which I had to lean back on the
saddle (supported by one of the lab guys) and put my legs up on the
handlebars and a second biopsie was taken using the second incision (same
sort of pressure/pain feeling but lots more blood this time). Dressing and
ice applied to the site and then after about 10 min I had to do a 1hr time
trial for a maximal effort. This went OK but I felt like I was bonking a
bit towards the end of the hour.....this could have been due to the fact
that I had to fast this morning and so hadn't eaten since the day before
when I ate 8g of carbs for every kg of body weight (101kg as of this
    morning!!).

Leg still feels a bit like it used to when I got corkys playing
footy.....hopefully it will be good by the morning. As for scars....my legs
are already pretty banged up and so a few more scars aren't really going to
    bother me all that much.

    Only six biopsies to go........

I agree! A corn kernel sized piece of muscle is not at all small. That
sounds like it will hurt A LOT once the drugs wear off.

For the two days after the biopsie it has pretty well felt similar to
getting a corky....a feeling I haven't had to put up with since retiring
from footy in 2003. Feels pretty good this arvo and I did not notice it
during the session that I had to do this morning at home (100min at 260W).

I am starting to feel a little lethargic and don't know if it is due to the
bike sessions or the massive amounts of carbs that I am eating??? Only 21
more days and I get my thousand bucks.....bring on Xmas!!!
