  1. Hi...

I'm hoping to get some comments and feedback from those of you that own KK trainers. More specifically, I have the 'road machine' model and think, key word, something may not be right.

    How so?

Hmmmm, well my PT shows the speed as being 40+ mph while I'm doing standard level 4 intervals!

Much as I wish it was true, I do not do my usual level 4 intervals at 1500 watts. 🙄

The speed function on the PT is perfect on the road and I don't think that's the problem. I'm having to do my intervals in, get this, a 53x12 at over 100 rpms. I cannot believe this is supposed to work that way, not to mention I find it taxing to ride at 100+ rpms for long periods of time.🙁

Before anyone mentions this, I've tightened the knob as much as I physically can (at least 4-5 full turns after initial contact with the tire) and have my rear tire up to about 120 psi.

Any ideas what could be happening? 😕

  2. You've had your KK for a few months (or at least weeks). Are you saying that the power/speed relationship has changed with the same setup?

Rap - amazingly enough, it has been just over 4 weeks though it feels like years!

Anyway, after I took 5 days off and what not, it has not just drastically changed, it seems completely out of sorts. I cannot imagine that spinning a 53x12 on the trainer at 100+ rpms could be done anywhere near the level I'm training at now, or will ever train for that matter!

I mean do you ride your trainer in a 53x12 and pedal at 100 rpm's?

Keep in mind, this is happening while I'm doing totally vanilla Level 4 work, not sprints or anything of that sort.

Having to do these at 100+ rpms is rather painstaking for me, I much, much prefer to be in the 75-85 rpm range.

  4. Lucy-MY coach told me about the exact same thing happening to his 2nd Cycle Ops Fluid2 Trainer. They sent him a new resistance unit and everything went back to normal. Kurt's CS is supposed to be equal to Saris-so i dont expect you to have any problems getting a replacement.

btw-I just borrowed a KK from the LBS because mine didnt come in today. I rode it an hour and I loved it. My 1-minute efforts were in a 53/16 and I was hurting at the 50 second mark. I couldnt imagine using the 53/12 except for leg tensions and certainley not at 100 rpm!!

Lucy, if the rear wheel is spinning on the KK trainer resistance cylinder and the rear wheel RPM's are high enough to read out 40 mph on the PT computer, then it seems to me that the resistance unit must not be generating resistance. 53x12 at 100 rpm's sounds like the KK trainer is riding like a set of rollers....😕

Some people on the forum have mentioned about the threaded knob that snugs the resistance cylinder up against the rear wheel can get stripped. I haven't experienced this but it seems like if this was happening in your case you would notice the rear wheel spinning independently of the resistance cyclinder. If the rear wheel consistently engages the resistance cylinder and there is no slipping and your rear wheel RPM's are as high as the PT says they are in in terms of average speed, then I think there must be something wrong inside the resistance cylinder.

What a beast! Did you wear it out in just 4 weeks?

  6. Hi

I agree with the previous posters. Your KK trainer is faulty - suggest you contact the manufacturer and explain to them what is happening.

    Or, perhaps you are Supergirl.

  7. Alright, thanks for the responses. Seems like I may have a wee bit of a lemon on my hands.

Seriously, it seems to be producing very little resistance. Just to get in my Level 4 zone, I am having to spin the biggest gear combo at 100+ rpms. That is rather alarming and surely, indicative of something being wrong!

Ha! Beast you say? Well you know...😄

As for you Toshiro, I'm pretty darn super at sprinting. Threshold work, sigh, that's another story!

I'd love to get a velodyne or tacx or even a computrainer but there's no way such a purchase is in the cards. The KK unit wasn't fancy but it was quite functional originally, and at this point, that's really all that's needed.

I called KK earlier, but they had closed, so this shall be my first order of business.

I will be interested in KK's response. At least on paper, their warranty is absolute (assuming you paid more than the warranty cut-off price -- $275?).

Not to hijack, but I am checking on this statement as I know that I have seen one popular reseller make this statement. However, the place that I purchased the KK trainer said this was equivalent to price fixing and against the law to make such statement by a reseller. Who is right? I don't know, but since I took the other guy's word I will check with Kurt Kinetic directly as they have been very helpful with other questions before and after I purchased the KK trainer.

I called KK directly and confirmed the statement. They do not warrant their products that have been sold at a price that violates the dealership agreement. Basically, anybody who buys wholesale from KK signs a reseller agreement which has price limits (almost every manufacturer has such limits in their reseller agreements). If the reseller sells the product at a price less than this, the warranty is not honored by KK. Your only recourse is with the reseller you bought it from. Whether such agreements are considered price fixing in the UK is a legal question and I don't know the answer. A month or so back there was a thread on the KK trainer and I posted this exact warning in that thread.

I just received the same message via email from a KK rep to confirm to your statement. At this point she has not directly answered my question about the buyer losing out on the warranty, but I will keep everyone posted if I get confirmation to this as well.

I wonder if I sent the reseller the difference in price it would make everyone happy. A few extra $$ is not a big deal to me and would be cheaper than me sending it back to the seller, plus I bet he wouldn't reject the extra few $$.🙂

(As a side not the people at KK are very delightful to deal with for questions)

  12. whew......I am good to go, but I am sure KK will probably deal with the reseller pertaining to the price agreement.

I am very impressed by the KK representatives.🙂

However, I am not sure if torturing myself on the KK trainer at home is going to be as fun as drafting the biker chicks in the spin class.😄

  13. Now then, one phone call and 5 minutes later - a new resistance unit will be on its way. While I was prepared to go into rather concise detail and even had the original sales receipt, it all unnecessary. I'm quite sure I spent more time giving the person I spoke with my address and spelling my name, than I did having to justify the problem, etc! 😄

Ah yes, this little thread highlights yet another reason I do not go to gyms, coed ones anyway, and sit on exercise bikes.

I hope you know that I am kidding around as my comments are an ongoing joke started by frenchy.🙂

I am too busy punishing myself to care about anyone at 5 am in the morning. Plus I have a great wife that puts up with all my imature silliness.

Awesome-I am so glad to know I will be buying this unit Friday and it has such great CS backing it up!!

I LOVE how it feels while riding-its hard to put into words. ULtra smooth and real is the best way?!?!?!?

  16. It must have been that 38mph sprint you did on that trainer maybe it's good not to have that ability after all.🙂

Not to mention she could end up on the "Do Not Sell To" list of all the trainer manufacturers. Lucy: "Hello, I'd like to order one of your trainers. My name is ... and I live at ..." Vendor: "Oh, I see here that you're the lady in New Mexico who shreds trainers. I'm afraid we can't sell you a trainer. You're on our Do Not Sell To List. In fact, you may have trouble boarding a plane if you keep this up."😄

    You guys are hilarious! 🙂

I'll have to get off the 'Do Not Call, er, Sell' list, though the URL escapes my memory right now 😎

You know, having good sprint abilities where I live is basically not applicable to anything - sort of like being a great skiier in.....Bermuda.

Well I guess the one consquence is blasting trainers to bits, but then that's not what I had hoped would come out of this whole fast-twitch revelation...🙄

  19. Only use your L7 powers to do good from now on.🙂

Good idea. Maybe she could power a grid of her town for brief durations and help save energy. She would probably get free trainers, for the free publicity.😄
