My friends and I are running our first NYC Marathon in two weeks -- can't wait! We were thinking of unwinding the following day with a massage.
First of all, is that a good idea? I can't imagine it wouldn't be, but I figure I'll be in enough pain as it is, and don't want to screw anything up.
Second, can anyone recommend a good one in the city? I'm looking for one who specializes in this kind of thing. I was hoping maybe the NYRRC would provide some resources, but no such luck.
Another spot I can suggest is below. Don't know if they've a site...I last was there 6-7 years ago....however I do know it's regarded highly and priced reasonably relative to NYC. Getting to the former mentioned was always easier for me so I stuck with them...however the place below is also well established.
OT: Marathon "buzzzz" is in the air in NYC...Billboards....in Central Park at the Finish line the bleachers are up....the flags are all up along the entire route....start the countdown!!!!

May I recommend "Ms Fifi"? She's quite talented, and you'll find her at third and broadway.

When I was doing sports massage I usually recommended waiting at least a couple of days after a 'thon for any but the gentlest work. If you do get a massage that Monday, be sure the MT knows how to handle you; in effect this'll be post-event massage, even a day later. No deep work!
Sorry I don't know anyone in NYC myself. But if you check the AMTA (www.amtamassage.org) they have a referral service; look for someone with sports massage certification, if they still have that.

I schedule my massages for the day or two after my races. As Brian points out this is not for deep work so make damn sure they know their [censored]. On a positive note I find that day after massage invaluable to recovery. There are always specific areas that have more discomfort than others and a good soft set of hands can do wonders. If you really want to spoil the hell out of yourself and increase your odds for a good race, get a massage about 10-14 days before the race.

I've never felt truly comfortable with this particular deviance. The very idea of the 'little fella' being that near to sharp teeth, together with the ever-present danger of the gag reflex, somehow left me a little twitchy in the nether regions. Sure - depending upon the skill of the young lady - there were lengthy moments of intense pleasure, but I never quite got rid of the voice in my head that said;
"Was that *really*a clever place to stick it?"
and this was with a girl I knew and trusted.
Roidger, I've repeatedly told you that inflatable woman do not count.

That's a lie. You said they counted if you gave them a name.
If you remember correctly Roidger that advice was valid only as it related to your testicles, you're applying too broad a meaning to it. The thinking was that the most insignificant, tiniest of things can gain some degree of respect and importance when a name is attached. But I still think "Bouncy1" and "Bouncy2" was imaginative.
