  1. Hi

Just fitted a rear derailleur to my old Benotto, and it works like a dream
    except....

In first gear, the cage *just* brushes the spokes. Looking along the frame,
it at least looks as though the whole cage assembly is, rather than being
exactly vertical, slightly tilted in towards the wheel. Is this normal? I
can't see any form of adjustment that woul d alter this angle. But at the
same time, the mechanism doesn't look or feel as though it's been
damaged/distorted at any point. Any sugestions and advice appreciated.

The mounting plate for the derailleur is probably bent. A good pipe
wrench clamped on the mount and a smidgen of brute force will correct it
or take it to the LBS where they should have the gear to align it properly.

I didn't use Campag in the Super Record era, but with all the later Campag
mechs I've used, it's normal for the cage to be at an angle so the upper
jockey wheel is further in than the lower. They are designed that way.

I remember eventually having the same problem with the spokes being brushed
with a worn out Campag Avanti 8-speed triple mech. The problem went away
after this and the Ergos were replaced.

If your gear hanger is not bent, a crude solution might be to place a 0.5mm
Marchisio shim behind the largest sprocket. Meanwhile, double check the
limit screw is adjusted as well as possible.

  4. Thanks guys. It's Strange how the whole mech is designed to 'lean in' that
way...can't quite see the reasoning myself. I have to say I still don't
think it's bent in any way, so I hesitate to try to force it. I can see the
case for the shim - and I'm sure that would fix it. I shal have another
think - but thanks again for your advice...food for thought (and
confirmation that One Is Not Losing It) is always helpful.

A long shot, but it might also be worth double-checking that the 2
plates that make up the cage are the right way round.
