Biking in Phoenix?

We have some pretty good riding here in Phx. You will be here at a prime time to make the most of
the days, it should be pretty nice out. I would definitely bring your bike but you could rent if you

Nope, Phoenix really sucks. I don't think there are any bike shops there either, though there are
tack shops everywhere.

I rented a bike from South Mountain Cycles, which is appropriately right near South Mountain, one of
the more popular biking spots in phx. They gave me a pretty sweet enduro expert there, hydraulic
discs, and took the time to set up the suspension for my weight. Very cool.

Not to mention it cost less than an alivio equipped Marin up in sedona that I absolutely hated. Oh,
and I called about 3 minutes before they closed, and they're like "Don't worry about it, we'll
probably be sticking around anyway, and it'll give us time to give it a quick tuneup for ya". Sweet.

Very cool shop, they're in a strip mall with a big yellow sign. Some sweet eye candy in there too.

Matthew, yes, there's lots of good riding here and November is perfect. Depending on your
abilities, must-do locations include South Mountain (everything from XC cruises to fairly technical
descents), Hawes (swoopy, fast XC), North Mountain (lots of variety and good distance rides, very
central location), and Pima & Dynamite (fun, lots of variation, kind of hard to find your way
around without a local).

If you're into hucking, there's a little freeride park in Tempe.

If you're into punishment, there's the Flight of the Pigs ride, which hits three major trails in a
single 75 mile loop (day after Thanksgiving; www.flightofthepigs.com).

Some decent rental places: South Mountain Cycles (www.smcycles.com), Cactus Bikes
(www.cactusbike.com), and Wheels & Gear.

the key is "strip" - the building is one large building, typically built cheaply of cinderblocks,
then subdivided into many little storefronts. Aesthetically they are truly hideous 95% of the time.
The parking lot is always out in front ( in true American style) and in general they are not
pedestrian or bike friendly.

I have a vague memory from when I was young( er) of some mountains called Superstition mountains or
something like that in the vicinity of Phoenix. I'm not for sure because we got lost and I'm not for
sure I'm out of them yet. That was over 25 years ago. Do you guys ride your bikes in that kind of
terrain? I remember it was absolutely awesome. We left the car and just split out in the hills.
After some time I found this sweet spot. Just laid myself down in the sand of probably a dried up
creek 'cause there was no Cactii there, at least not outside of me 😉 I remember thinking that this
was the most pleasant place I had ever been in and if I was ever to choose a place to die in, this
would be it. Kinda cool when a place stays with you the rest of your life that way 😉

Yeah, we ride in that kind of terrain. But not in the Superstitions -- it's Wilderness, mostly,
which means no bikes. There are some trails near the edge of the Wilderness that are still in the
Superstitions, and they're pretty great -- very primitive, rugged, and remote.

How cool. Yeah, the desert is pretty great when it's not trying to kill you. As we deal with 100F
temperatures at this late date, the desert is kind of a drag. We narrowly avoided several
heat-related emergencies on an epic ride this weekend. :-/
