We can't tell you which saddle will be 'good'. We can tell you which saddle we think is good. I am a big fan of Arione, but that may not be for you. Try different saddles out (if you can) and see which one feels best.

I agree that what works for one person is not necessarily the best for the next. My LBS has a saddle trial program. You can pay a deposit and check out a saddle. You can swap that saddle for another until you find the one that is best for you.

FWIW, I like my Specialized Avatar (MSRP $75). It comes in three widths to accomodate different sized butts. I have the 143 mm. I road 75 miles per day on two consecutive days, and my butt never complained.

More important than which saddle is that the saddle is positioned properly. No saddle will be comfortable if it is not in the right position for you.

It's your butt. You know what fits it! (Unless you start posting pictures of your butt, but we don't want to see that. Not ever!) 🙂

The Fizik Arione is my FAVORITE SADDLE of all time, but one of my riding buddies pulled up on Saturday with a saddle that looks like the Fizik Arione, is more comfortable and he bought it on ebay. The Saddle is made by Neuvation and is a model S2. I sat on it in the parking lot we meet up at and it was so nice. You may want to check it out. He got his on eBay when he typed in Fizik Arione.

I have also heard that the Arione is very good. I have the SLR Carbon and it is more comfortable than it looks, very light (I think like 135g.?)
but it is, well, hard. I never think it is uncomfortable but I do a lot of 120mi+ rides and I sometimes wonder if the Arione or something else might be better. The SLR looks good so I tell myself better to look good than feel good.🙂 I noticed that Sella
has a new seat on the web that is supposed to be like, 85grams? Seems that good newer high quality shorts and chamois cream matter as much as anything. That and if you ride hard the weight is on your feet and not the seat. One last thing and this has probably been beaten to death here before-foregive me I'm new here-I ride tubular tires and I find that on the long rides good tires change the whole experience! Keep crankin!

MrKlein you should definitely treat yourself to the Fizik Arione. I bet if you do, you won't want to ride anything else on all your bikes. They not only look really nice in a bike, but they feel so good on long rides. I normally wear the Performance Elite Bibs when I train and even with less expensive clothing, the saddle feels very comfortable. The only setback is that that they are expensive saddles. Especially the limited edition colors. 🙄

how do you measure your 'sit bones' so that you can get the right sized saddle?
i notice that saddle width measurement is side to side, but does not take into account the dropping away of those sides - some stay flat, while others curve downwards - if that makes sense...

Plain X-ray of your pelvis would work well. But more practical would be to just push and prod your bottom by your partner with a ruler. 😄

Specialized dealers have a pad that you sit on, affectionately known as the "assometer". When you sit on the pad, your sit bones leave an impression.

I used the Specialized "assmeter" and got the correct sized Specialized Alias saddle and it was worthless for me. I returned it and now have a Fizik Arione on my road bike and the Arione Tri on my Mtn Bike and am quite satisfied.

I recently saw the Arione Tri at Nashbar for $89 as I recall plus they usually have a coupon.

I agree. Specialized Saddles are not worth a darn. They are the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE saddle I have ever ridden. Fizik is the king in this category. I know my butt thanks me every time I plant it on my Arione. So nice!🙄

Guys I have the Fizik Arione and I have been getting the worst rash and pain in the upper part of my legs, practically where my legs meet my but that area. I think it is the wings of the Fizik Arione that are messing me up, I had it for a year with no problems, but when I upped my miles to about 80 it has been killing me. Is there anything you suggest that has a lot of padding and more comfortable.

Cohiba often when you increase mileage in the beginning, your butt will hurt no matter what kind of saddle you are riding. It just requires a little toughening of that region. After a month or two of riding at that level your butt won't hurt that much.

Other than that, have you seen the Neuvation line of saddles? They are all padded and really nice. My favorites are the S3 and S2 saddles. They are very nice and worth a look. John Neugent even gurantees the comfort with a 100% money back gurantee. So the purchase is risk free.

something with very shallow wings? or a chamois cream? maybe go so far as a san marco rolls :p

Minimalist saddles can be very comfortable if they fit. You could take a look at specialized, but there are so many to choose from. Try a few.

CG, I think you're going a bit hard with your expression of dislike for specialized saddles. There are plenty of people out there who's butts are suited to thier designs. Mine being one of them.
I had a fizik saddle and it was too round and I had blood restriction problems. Not got to ride an Arione yet which of course gets so many good reviews, but it looks too similar to the fizik I got with my bike, so I'm reluctant to bother.

I'm planning on trying a few saddles leading up to Christmas, I think thats the only way you can be sure of what works for you.

I think its great Neuvation offers a test plan and money back/swap plan. His way of doing business is very refreshing. I've looked at his saddles on line, and they do look worth trying. I'm surprised he doesn't had some OEM work with his good value saddles and wheels.

Phill I think I may have been very judgemental with the Specialized saddles. I apologize. I agree that all saddles are very personal. I am having personal success with the Fizik Arione and the S2 and S3 saddles from Neuvation. My suggestion if possible is to TEST TEST TEST as many saddles at the LBS before purchasing. That is how I found the Fizik saddle I currently ride and the Neuvation Saddles. I had a chance to spin on them in the parking lot before dropping any money on them. Eventually a nice saddle will emerge that makes all parts in the Southern Region happy.
