I think he means wider tyres provide a bit more cushioning. -

Yep, I'd agree with that. Weinmann used to make an incredibly strong and
stiff rim that was concave on the inside surface. We made wheels with
them for customers who had wheel strength 'issues'. It was usually
disappointing.
In my opinion the best guide to strength lies in the way that the spoke
fits the hub. It should be a good close fit so that there isn't an
unsupported elbow.--

tolerate good spoke tension. Maybe you could indeed build stronger wheels
with certain other rims, but a lot of seemingly-beefier rims can't really
take higher tension, especially ones with single eyelets.There's also the theory that a stiffer rim directly affects the amount of
spoke slackening, but I don't think there's much to be gained in this regard

IIRC the Weinmann one was just called Concave, available in various
sizes (Dawes fitted them to the original Ranger mountain bike, Raleigh
used them on some tourers). The Gentleman and Super Champion Mod 58
were by Wolber. I had some Mod 58s and they were really good rims. -

Low spoke count wheels can be very strong. The wheel that I ran into a
many-ton lump of rock at 46mph last year is still true to within 1mm side
to side and less than that in runout, despite having only 18 spokes.Yes, a good well built traditional wheel with 32 or 36 spokes is very
strong, but so is a good modern wheel with half that number.--
