OTish, anyway, but the topic of drivers on the phone comes up
occasionally.
Front page news in my local newspaper today - the local chief
superintendent got caught using a handheld mobile phone while driving
(in heavy rain for several miles). When a member of the public
apprehended him and demanded his name and number in order to register
a complaint (Joe public at this stage not realising he was the most
senior local policeman), Mr Plod was reputedly blase and rude.
So, who wants to guess the penalty Mr Plod was victimised with?
A warning to remain on his personnel record for 12 months.
Oh, and he donated 30 quid to an unspecified charity.
Mr Plod says it just goes to show how dangerous it is to allow
yourself to be distracted when driving.
FWIW, Mr Plod was actually chief superintendent Guy Derby, driving
along the A25 to Reigate police station, including negotiation of
roundabouts ('twas a roundabout where he cut up Joe Public, who then
noticed the phone).
