how to install bar end mirror (mtb type handle bars)?

Depends on the type of mirror purchased.

Yes, you can pull the plug out and insert those expansion plug into it.
If it's one of those wrap around type, then you'll need to shift the
handlebar grip to make room on the bar.

Many (most?) grips cover the end of the bar without the need for a
separate plug, so yes, they need to be cut. In my experience, this is
easy to do on modern style grips as they tend to have 'cut lines' where
the material is thinner. Older style one like the hard rubber "Raleigh"
styles are more difficult.

I find the CatEye bar-end mirror to be one of the best around. The
lightweight plastic mirror causes less vibration than heavier ones like
the Mirrocycle. I use one with a modified mount on my touring bike
(with drop bars) and others on all my family's bikes.

I will have a look, but I think they do have a 'cut line', IIRC

I bought a cheap zefal from nashbar for like $8, if it's total [censored] I
will upgrade to the cateye....
